04 CTS Ignition Key Stuck, but I can remove the key and restart after a battery disconnect

CTS 04, 102K miles, New Battery When trying to start the car, the dash lights illuminate as normal, but no cranking action occurs. When trying to remove the key, the key will not turn back to the home position for key removal. While the key is stuck in the ignition, movement of the the transmission lever out of park is not functioning. After removing the main battery connections for approx. 15-30 min, and then reconnecting, the key can now be removed. After removing the key, and then reinserting, the car can then be started without any problem. After several test stop and starts immediately following the battery disconnect / reconnect, all appears to be right with the world. After an undetermined time or perhaps complete randomness, the original symptom appears again. Thanks, Bill

The automatic transmission shift lock control system is a safety device that prevents an inadvertent shift out of PARK when the engine is running. The driver must press the brake pedal before moving the shift lever out of the PARK position. The system consists of the following components.
• The automatic transmission shift lock control solenoid
• The brake switch
• The rear integration module (RIM)
• The transmission control module (TCM) or powertrain control module (PCM)
With the ignition ON, battery positive voltage is supplied to the automatic transmission shift lock control solenoid from the ignition 3 relay. The automatic transmission shift lock control solenoid is controlled by the rear integration module. When the rear integration module (RIM) receives a class 2 serial data message from the transmission control module (TCM) or powertrain control module (PCM) indicating that the shift lever is in the PARK position the rear integration module (RIM) grounds the automatic transmission shift lock control solenoid control circuit. This causes the solenoid to energize mechanically locking the shift lever in the PARK position. When the driver presses the brake pedal the rear integration module receives the brake applied signal and turns off the ground to the automatic transmission shift lock control solenoid control circuit. This allows the shift lever to be moved out of the PARK position.

SOURCE: how to get key out that is stuck in ignition

Remove steering column shroud(cover)and tap ignition barrel with small hammer while twisting key backwards and forwards, also turn steering wheel backwards and forwards sometimes this is enough to release key as the locking pins in barrel and the steering lock pin do sometimes jam.You will have to remove steering column shroud to replace ignition barrel if tapping/hitting it doesnt work anyway so its not a wasted effort.Good luck, let me know how it works out

SOURCE: can't remove key from ignition. battery is dead

If the battery is dead, the ignition keys will not release from the ignition. If there is no signal from the transmission shifter that it's in park since the battery is dead, then the ignition lock will not release the keys.  After charging the battery or jumping the blazer to start it and the key's still will not release, try this.
There is a "plunger" as part if the ignition. Under the steering wheel there is a small removable cap that you can take off and put a small screw driver up into and press the plunger in and it will release the key. Good luck and hope this helps, Keep me posted be glad to help.

Put some pressure on the steering wheel in one direction or the other this may take the pressure off the cylinder itself and allow you to do what is needed...hope this works.

Ha this used to happen to me with my sunfire. Just wiggle the steering wheel while trying to wiggle the key out. Sometimes the steering wheel locks up and then keys will get stuck in ignition. Hope this helps.

I have a 03 cadillac cts the other day after work i go get in the car try and start it up the radio part reads anti theft / service theft sytem and does not start and also said remove key... what the

The vehicle is having problems reading the tiny metal security slug in the ignition key. When you used a key to unlock the door, you disabled the security system so it started. There are a variety of different resistance values on the slugs in the key. You can have someone with a ohm meter read the resistance of yours and install a fixed resistor of the same identical value to the wiring for the key security system. You may alternatively spray contact cleaner or a bit of WD-40 in the ignition switch to clean it off. Insert and remove the key several times, wiping it off each time you remove it.

Won't start key stuck in ignition gas and temp gauge not working

this sounds like something is draining the battery like a bad alternator. if you install a new battery the car will run until the car drains the battery due to a bad alternator or bad wiring, these cars are all electronic so without a good battery you cant open door or start, take a look at battery and if it is low or dead again then have the charging system checked.

Battery fully charged, car wont start, cant remove key, 2004 cadillac cts

There is a magnetic switch on the 'park' position. The car only starts or releases the key in 'park' is enabled. Maybe this switch is not working! Try to replace it!

I tryed starting my 2006 cadillac cts this morning and the key turns over and the car wont start. also as i bring the key back the key wont come out of the ignition. now its stuck. my key fab does not...

try removing your key fob and replacing the battery .it sounds like its a security issue and the body control has locked you out and is keeping the key too.replacing the battery in the key fob should restore all.if not you will need a body control module and has to be programmed by a dealer.

My key is stuck in the ignition of my 2006 cadillac cts

2005 CTS 3.6 Dead battery, key stuck, service anti theft and nothing happens when you turn key, Ttried everything, ECM reset, key memory reset, charged battery to 12.7 volts, locked door w remote and opened w key, anyway you get the idea. After 3 days of online reading and trying, THIS IS WHAT WORKED, 1. put key into on position 2. removed sarter relay from front fuse panel 3. jumped 1st pin closest to fender and passenger seat with pin that is closest to motor and front fender. I used a paper clip and just made contact long enough for car to start. ran car for five minutes and took key out and everything went back to normal. then I took car to advance auto parts to have engine light reset. if car does not go back to normal you have ECM (car computer) failure. video on YouTube under "no crank, no start"

Hi, I have a Cadillac CTS 04, and periodically the "Security Theft System" will come up and the car cannot start and the key will not come out. We have disconnected the battery and the car seems to be fine...

Hello, I also have a 2004 CTS and I suspect you may have a problem with the key you are using to start the car. The key is hard-coded to the car with a small electronic chip (resides inside the key). If this chip is damaged or not communicating with the car at the time its entered into the ignition, the car's security system assumes you are trying to steal the car with a bogus key. If you have a spare key, I recommend using that one or have the key replaced by the dealer.

2003 chevy tahoe with key stuck in ignition. vehicle previously broken into and stolen with scewdriver to ignition. ignition replaced. key now stuck and cannot turn vehcile off. can shift to driver,...

I have towed several of these with same problem. Sounds like to me it needs to go back in for the ignition switch again. Unless it's not going into park. If it's not going into park it would be a shift linkage issue and needs to be adjusted. Chris J.C. Towing & Recovery

Key stuck in ignition will not turn on think i trip some kind of anti theft mechanism only had 1 day any suggestions

If you have a backup key, try to disable system by using the key to lock and then un-lock the driver side door. This may work to disable the anti-theft mode. If that doesn't work, disconnect the battery cables then re-correct that normally is the trick. However, make sure it's not your battery. Use the unboard computer and check your battery voltage to make sure it's sufficient to start the car. The key won't eject if the battery is too low to start the car.
