This is a new printer, purchased in Sept. '08. I printed about 5-10 81/2 X 11 pages in b/w. The next time I turned my printer on, the continuous red light came on indicating "out of ink". Last Sept. I had bought a new printer of this exact kind and it worked for about 6 months and the same thing happened only after using it for about 100 or so sheets of this same size. I didn't use it any more. I now need a printer and bought this one new, thinking maybe the other one was just had been a bad make or something. Can you help me?
Re: This is a new printer. I printed 5 pages of black...
Assume all the ink cartridges are original because a fake one may give that type of warning. I would open the printer and check that the plastic sheet covering the cartridge opening has been taken away. I would take out each cartridge and put it back. If the problem persists, it is likely that the ink in the tank had been dried out (very old stock) or the printer ink sensor is busted. It should still be under warranty I hope.

I had that model and the same experience. I kept buying ink until I realized I could have nearly bought the printer for nearly the same cost as ink refills, black and color. I also had an HP. Same thing. I finally bought the Kodak 3250. The ads about ink costs was so correct. Many more pages are printed before the "need ink" message is displayed. Buying ink online saves even more.
Black printer ink in HP Photosmart may fail to be recognized by the printer. Most times an error message will be sent indicating that something is wrong with the black print cartridge. Sometimes the printer may accept to print with the black ink, but the printouts may have horizontal lines and very illegible letters. In such a case a manual cleaning of the print head should be carried out. In doing the manual cleaning, one should spray Windex heavily on paper towel and wipe off the surface of the print head.
Check the status of each cartride by using the ink lamp.
You have 3 lamps
(A) Alarm lamp
(B) Black ink lamp
(C) Color ink lamp
Make sure that the LED is on standby mode.
a) If the ink lamp lights.
Cause : Ink is low.
Action :You can continue printing for a while, but we recommend you have a new FINE cartridge available.
b) The Alarm Lamp lights and the ink lamp flashes .
* If "E, 1, 3 " is displayed on the LED, ink has run out.
Cause : Ink level cannot be detected.
Action : Ink may have run out.
The function for detecting the remaining ink level will be disabled since the ink level cannot be correctly detected.
If you want to continue printing without this function, press Stop/Resset buttonfor atleast 5 seconds.
Canon recommends to use new genuine Canon cartridges in order to obtain optimum qualities.
* If E,1, 6" is displayed on the LED,
Cause : Ink has run out.
Action. Rreplace the ink cartridge and close the Scanning Unit (Printer Cover).
If printing is in progress, you want to continue printing, press the Stop/Reset button for atleast 5 seconds with the ink cartridge installed. Then printing can continue under the ink out condition.
The function for detecting the remaining ink level will be disabled.
Replace the empty ink cartridge immediately after the printing. The resulting print quality is not satisfactory, if printing is continued under the ink out condition.
c) Only the ink lamp flashes
Cause : The function for detecting the remaining in level is disabled.
Hope this helps.

Have a good day.
check the ink level of the color cartridges also. because to print in black it will use some color also.
if everything is ok try this
> unplug the usb cable from the printer
> click on "start-->control panel--> printers and faxes".
> select all the printer icons which is related to your priter and delete it.
> once that is done, plug the usb cable back to the printer.
> wait for few minutes while it installs the driver automatically.
> if done, try printing in black from varius applications like notepad, wordpad, ms word etc.
> if o go, you may have to service the unit as you have already tried with 3 different black cartridges.
did anyone ever solve this issue? We have the same printer and can't get the Dam thing to just acknowledge black ink only.. When any of the color cartridges are low the stupid printer won't allow us to proceed printing in black until we replace the cartridge that is low..$#@**&^*$#
The ink detection is a critical function of the printer.
Ink actually acts as a lubricant for the heads, and running (Printing) without ink is equavalent to driving a car without oil.
I.E. It will seize eventually....
Hopefully you didn't print much without the ink, and your heads are still in good shape...
Here is a chip reset procedure....
With the original chip now attached to the compatible cartridge (you may need double sided tape to get the chip to stick well to the cartridge), and with the cartridge now in the printer, Press and hold the Reset/OK Button for 5 seconds to reset the chips.
The "Ink Low" dialog box will pop up (similar to photo 1 below)
Continue to print until the "ink has run out" dialog box pops up (similar to photo 2 Below) Click "OK" to continue to print.
The "Ink Low" dialog box may reappear, if so repeat the first 2 steps
Then the "once empty" dialog box will pop up (similar to photo 3 Below) Click "Yes" to continue to print
The "Not Liable" dialog box will pop up (similar to photo 4 below). Click "Yes" to continue to print
Continue to print until the "remaining level of ink" dialog box pops up (similar to photo 5 Below) Click "OK" to continue to print
Another dialog box will pop up with the "press and hold the Resume" or "press and hold the Paper Feed" button (similar to photo 6). Press and hold the "STOP/RESET" button (for Canon MP Series) or "PAPER FEED" button (for Canon IP Series) for 5 seconds. DO NOT Click "Back" or "Cancel Printing"
The "Ink Monitor" dialog box will appear and the printer will continue to print. (similar to photo 7) In the event that that the "press and hold the Resume " dialog box pops up again, Press and hold the Paper Feed Button or Stop/Reset Button for 5 seconds
