Dell Dimension 4600 Sound Board doesn't work - Dell Audio Cards

I sure appreciate the effort. Nothing showed up, making me think I may need to replace my sound board. Don't know how expensive that would be. Maybe a new computer would be about the same cost. I'm pretty clueless about hardware.

Let’s check the sound card on your PC. Go to "Device Manager" and look if any yellow or red alerts are being displayed next to “Sound, video and game controllers”. To access the "Device Manager" go to the 'Control Panel", "Administrative Tools", "Computer Management" and select "Device Manager" located in the left side column. If there is an error or alert on a device, double click on the device and it will tell what the problem is, i.e.… drivers not installed, cannot start this device, etc…

Just checked BEST BUY's website and found sound cards ranging from $26.99 to $149.99.

According to Microsoft, Sound Blaster 1040 fully compatible with Win 7 and does not need any extra software. Use Windows 7 Update and check for updates, under optional as well.

I have a dimension 4600 desktop and the sound card fan making noise, can I replace the fan.

WELL depends. If your sound card is a INTEGRATED (which means to the its not fixable easily) then no. but if your video card is its own CARD. then its possible to get just a new one - they cheap these days - if its a great one - and you want to save hundreds of dollars then you should check out the specialty stores that do micro repairs like that - maybe your local computer store might be equipped. its specialty so maybe not - but worth a try if its a $400 sound card. if not - buy a new one - its most likly OLD - so go buy a creative labs sound card - $99 for a real good one - $30 for a cheaper BUT GOOD one - or - hope this helped

My speakers on my Dell Dimension do not work

Check to see if you have a sound card in a pci slot or if the sound is intergrated into the motherboard. If its in the board you can get the driver from the computer or motherboard manufacturer. If its a pci card get the driver from the card manufactures website

I have a Dell Dimension 4600, will a PCI Express sound card work in place of the original Sound Blaster 5.1 sound card

Well, the short answer to your question is "No, it won't work". The Dell Dimension 4600 does not have any PCI Express slots in it, therefore you can't install it, and therefore it won't work. But, if you installed a PCI sound card, it would work. The BIOS would recognize the add-on sound card, disable the onboard sound, and your sound will start going through the expansion card instead. Hope this helps.

Went from a Dell Dimension 8250 to a Dell Optiplex GX280

Check for updated drivers and install if available. If that does not resolve the issue completely remove the card and any software and drivers and do a clean install with the new drivers
