Question about Office Equipment & Supplies

The laptop reads Service error 5100 when I try to print. The light on the Canon printer also blinks 2x. I tried turning them off and off as the book suggests. I would like for it to print but I was actually trying to find out if the printer can be set up to print checks written from Quicken? thanks, Lisa Moody

In step 5 of first solution, the green lights do NOT blink. Instead, one orange light is solid. Tried turning off/on, unplugged several times and no change.

  • lmoodyan Oct 22, 2008

Changed the data cable and printer blinks 2x, green then orange. Turned laptop on and off and printer on and off. Same blinking.

  • lmoodyan Oct 22, 2008

After following Steps 1-8 by THafa, the printer blinks 2x, green then orange. The paragraph following the steps does not make a lot of sense because the first step is to unplug the printer. That does not work for me.

Hi,

The error message indicates a hardware fault or more specifically as others have pointed out, Carriage Home Position Error for a Canon printer.

If a DIY (do-it-yourself) is being considered (mechanical work involved), any or all the following would have to be checked/cleaned:

  • long thin plastic encoder strip with bar code like marks;
  • print head/carriage unit path;
  • print head parking area (pls include the purge cap, sliding mechanism, purge base/mechanism),
  • might as well include the paper rollers.
Incidentally, this page may shed additional insights.

Should you be uncomfortable performing a hardware repair, perhaps your best bet then would be to seek the services of a qualified professional.

Hope this be of initial help/idea. Pls post back how things turned up or should you need additional information.

Good luck and kind regards. Thank you for using FixYa.

Even though the lever for the catridge was locked, the catridge wasn't
sitting properly in the carriage and it was hitting the side of the
front cover when it moves. Pushed the catridge in place to solve the
    problem.

    thanks
    good luck

Have you dropped it?

5100 is a carriage error, check the timing strip for contamination(plastic strip about 1/4" in width)
The unit is not homing, check for obstructions.

1. hold RESUME then press & hold POWER
2. release RESUME, then press it twice, the light should go amber then green again.
3. you're now in service mode (you can release POWER now)

I think waste tank reset is 4 presses of the RESUME button. To confirm, press POWER once.

or try this:

1. clean **** strip film
2. clean **** strip film sensor (back of head carriage)(use contact cleaner)
3. fix purge unit

The service error is displayed because the cartridge is not placed properly .

You have a check over the positioning of the cartridge .

Error 5100 in Canon MP160

Hi You can Try

Error Code 5100
Solution 1:
Clean the timing strip.

Solution 2:
The purge cap (the white sliding mechanism that the print head parks to when it's not in use) may be not lubricated well enough .

Lubricate the sliders with some white grease (don't get it on the small wipers or the black caps); this repair probably require to remove the right panel off of the printer to gain access to the purge mechanism.

Regarding service error 5100 in canon ip1880 printer

1. Try to reset the ink counter by iptool software (sometimes it help)
2. Unplug the usb cable and then turn off and on your printer for a few times.
service error 5100 seems like indicating of mecanism exhausted or out of buffer ram in the printer. You should reduce the amount of pages to print at one time.
Good luck.
