DW744 table saw

The motor sounds like it speeds up and then down, there is quite a
lot of movement up and down, I really like the saw but am afraid to use
it in this condition I bought it in 2002 can you help it through a few more
years
Thanks Jim

Balde movement up and down? If so, that would suggest worn bearings in teh gearbox. If they are worn there then they might also be worn in the motor. If this happens the armature will float up and down causing it to rub against the stator. You may be able to get the bearings sorted without needing any new motr parts. I beleive this saw uses an induction motor so beware if it does need replcing you might want to be sitting down when you get the quote.

there are no adjustments on the movement you described. If this is a new saw as indicated I would return for warranty repair/replacement.

The motor sometimes starts right away and at other times I have to use a wood stick to spin the blade and it starts

the brushes in a dw744 have a ledge when they get too short that hangs up. replace the brushes and you should have no problem. the brush holder comes right out with a little coaxing with a screwdriver after the end cap is removed. it just plugs right in.

I was cutting 2" dense foam insulation board,

The problem you have is a faulty field coil, the Bosch saws unfortunatly have a bit of an issue with this. The coil can be replaced separatly so you won't have to replace the whole motor. Bosch has a 1 yr warranty on thier table saw so this is a warranty replacment provided the saw was purchased within the year. If not the coil replacment is still cheaper than buying a whole new saw, but should really be done by a service center because of the level of difficulty of the repair.

How can i get a guard for this table saw the dw 746

You can order them at www.dewaltservicenet.com.
The DW746 and DW744 use the same guard assembly, if you're talking about the hinged guard over the blade.

Replaced armature and brush's and there is alot of heat and spark and it starts slowing down?

Unless somewhat preformed, brushes have a tendency to arc like crazy and can produce heat and even smoke. I would remove the brushes and use a fine 'keyhole' type file to give them a little inside curve so they have better contact to start with.

Dewalt dw744 motor runs slow and smokes, what parts need replacing?

probably whole motor, if the bearings started to seize up it could have caused the armature/field to burn or if you overloaded the tool the same thing would happen. Does the tool have a burnt electrical smell, if so the motor is burnt and the cost of parts might outweigh getting repaired, You can go to Dewaltservicenet.com and find out the prices and also you might want to call a Dewalt Factory Service Center and ask them about the MAX repair rate on this tool and they will fix everything for that price, no matter what.
