Re: my lap top was stolen
Computers often have a label from MicroSoft with the serial number of the installed OS. Both laptops I bought over the years had the sticker applied, one in the back, the other underneath.
If you contact MS with that number (it could also be listed on a recovery disk supplied with the laptop when new), they will provide you with a replacement disk for some nominal fee; it used to be $10.
You might also try emailing Acer to see if they can (or will) provide you with a recovery disk set as long as you can prove ownership of the PC.
On the viruses (virii?), since you need to reinstall the OS, once i had the needed CDs in hand, I would format the drive before re-installing.

magooster857, You cannot use a command prompt to find the password of your computer. If you made a recovery disk from within Windows you can boot to it to recover your password. You will need to purchase software online to recover your password or reinstall Windows.

Find any "generic" Microsoft Windows XP Home Edition CD-ROM disk.
Use that disk, and the 25-character product-key on the sticker on the bottom of the laptop.
Then, access ACER's web-site, and download the specific device-drivers that are found
on the ACER-customized Windows disk (which you don't have).
Or, contact ACER, and pay $20 to $40 to purchase a replacement "System Recovery" set of disks.
if your asking to install XP on top of vista.. if you do not like vista, then ur listening to your friends who have no idea what their talking about because its awesome and when windows 7 comes out youll be stunned...this is verry easy if you have XP disc ready, restart your computer you need to wipe ur hard drive to get rid of the old operating system, first save any thing you want thus wiping hard drive saves nothing.... techniquly its still there but ya....put in disc of XP and run the disc to install XP,. firstly download a good anti virus and spyware programme for example AVG 8 Free.
Antivirus 2008 needs to be removed in safe mode (press F8 on start up) and select start windows in safe mode, choose windows XP, then choose the administrator account and the run the anti virus then restart your pc
