Question about Toshiba 36HFX71 36" TV

Open Question

Toshiba 36hfx IR

Fixed it.
Power button was sticking on TV and also found gunk on IR receiver window next to power button. Unplugged TV, cleaned both, sprayed power buttun with contact cleaner to free up. Let dry and powered up. Works fine. Sometimes its the simple stuff.

SOURCE: I have a Toshiba TV model 36A43 that won't power

It sounds like you have a switch problem at the front panel of the set. If a switch gets stuck internally the micro is trying to process the command and won't respond to any other commands. The only way to find out is to go into the set and desolder all the manual switches and see if the remote will work the set. It has a seperate detector for the remote. Thanks for using fixya. Good luck

Bought a used Toshiba model# 32A33 tv with vchip code set. Cannot reset. How can I reset vchip code?

Hold down the Vol - key on the TV. When Volume is at the minimum, hold down the 0 button on the remote. Remain holding both keys for at least 1 full second. Be sure your arm or hand is not obstructing the remote IR beam to the TVs IR receiver.

the Ir led is usually behind a dark window, you can locate it by doing a command while real close to the tv,
once you find it then see if it takes commands all the time.
if it takes a command and waits a while to take another then the power to the ir led is likely the issue, as you said it may have a loose connector at it or the connection to the main board.
one way to give it power is to solder a 10 mfd cap across it and it will store some power for you, thats only a temp fix and you will likely get the polarity wrong.
there are tons of Ir leds on the market and even radio shack still carries them. though they are a transistor and need biased , sometimes just replacing them randomly an they work fine as they are all low power.
this is the basic circuit for a detector
http://www.tkk.fi/Misc/Electronics/circuits/irdetect.gif
notice the change in the ir causes a change in voltage and is transmitted down the line.

this is likely what you have in your tv now
http://www.solarbotics.com/products/pna4602/

it has the same circuit inside it
you can monitor the output as it fluctuates but it will be fast.

the next best to save is to just use an external tuner and speakers they will sound better anyway.

TV Remote control

The IR reciever should be in the front of the set where the remote IR window is located.

I can tell you that there is a lot more that can go wrong than just the IR reciever. There may be a buffer amp along the way to the uPC, or there may be a fault with the uPC itself. The fault may also be a cold solder connection, or a missing supply voltage to the the IR reciever or to some of the components involved in the IR signal process.

In opening and working on your set, there are serious safety issues involved. You should be giving the set out to a trained and experienced TV tech for proper and reliable service.

Remote will not function with TV

If two remotes do not work. I would say the IR sensor on the front panel of the TV might be defective.
Can you provide an exact TV model number to try to locate an IR sensor part suppier?

The IR sensor on the main circuit board may have gotten zapped or possibly the window where the IR signal passes through may need cleaned. It's located on the front of the set near the control buttons. Stargazer
