You need to use the software to play DVD movies. Try using windows media player to start the DVD or if the computer came with DVD playing software then try it. You can also check the Dell site and download the latest driver package and install the drivers. It might be missing the dvd rom driver. When you put in the DVD does it autoplay and ask you what software to use to open the disc? You can also go into the control panel and check the device manager. Check and see if the dvd rom is a problem device and/or try to update driver for the device. Have you tried different dvds? Maybe it is having a problem with just that DVD. Some DVD's will not play in a computer but will play in a DVD player.
First try cleaning the DVD drive lense. If it does not help then Try system restore to restore your computer to a previous date. For that click Start- Programs -> Accessories -> System Tools -> System Restore. Click Restore my computer to an earlier time and click Next. Select a date from the calender( select a date when it used to work) and click Next twice. Windows will automatically restart when restoration is done
When windows starts again try to burn disc. If the same problem remains then the DVDRW drive may have some problem.
