Firefox bookmarks toolbar menu disappeared

The bookmarks menu has disappeared. I managed to add the bookmarks icon that opens a side bar but I don't like clicking on it instead of the menu.
How do I get the menu back?

It hasn't helped. Still no menu. Is there a setting somewhere to hide menus? Maybe I should take a look there.

  • hagoleshet Oct 20, 2008

    still doesn't help.
the menu itself is missing, not the list of bookmarks. resetting via safe mode didn't help either

  • hagoleshet Oct 20, 2008

Yes it does. At least I can use that to add new bookmarks.

  • hagoleshet Oct 20, 2008

It's checked but I only have the button and not the menu itself.

  • hagoleshet Oct 20, 2008

I can access the sidebar menu.
I tried restoring the settings. The menu hasn't reappeared.
Could it be connected to any add-ons? Or by the upgrade to FF3?

  • hagoleshet Oct 21, 2008

I tried these. Nothing works. I guess all these solutions help when the bookmarks are lost but here the bookmarks exist and are in reach via the bookmarks button. It's the MENU itself that is missing and that won't come back no matter what I try :-(

  • hagoleshet Oct 22, 2008

The FF support forum found the fix! The delicious add-on caused the problem. The option to bring back the bookmarks menu appeared on the bottom of the delicious menu.

I fixed this by disabling the Delicious add-on, YMMV.

Recovering Your Firefox Bookmarks

This is documented elsewhere, but perhaps comes across as too nerdy for some. If you’re using Windows XP, recovering from a crash or whatever, and find that your Firefox bookmarks (and bookmarklets and bookmark toolbar) have disappeared, here’s what to do:

* Close Firefox if it's running.
* Find your profile in c:\Documents and Settings\[your XP user name]\Application Data\Mozilla\Firefox\Profiles
* There should be a subfolder there called bookmarkbackups. Find the most recent bookmarks html file in there (usually with a date after the ‘bookmarks’ bit.
* Copy it to somewhere safe and rename the existing one bookmarks.html.
* Copy it to the default profiles folder (up one level from the bookmarkbackups folder, deleting the existing bookmarks.html file.)
* Close Firefox if it’s running and launch it. Your old bookmarks should be restored.

(And, while I'm at it, here's a solution if your Firefox browser refuses to remember any of your changed settings in toolbars etc when you close it, resetting everything back to what it was before. The same bug -- likely to be fixed soon -- also deletes your search engines in the search box to the right of the address box. This fix will fix both problems:

* Locate the localstore.rdf file in the same place as above.
* Delete it.
* Restart Firefox. You should be good to go.

can you access view - > sidebar - > bookmarks?

    try this one
right click on gray area alongside of the menus, file, edit, view, history
    then click on customize
click on restore default set, make sure you don't have any other customized menus installed.

If you encounter strange problems relating to bookmarks, downloads, window placement, toolbars, history, or other settings, it is recommended that you try creating a new profile and attempting to reproduce the problem before filing bugs. Create a new profile by running Firefox with the -P command line argument, choose the "Manage Profiles" button and then choose "Create Profile...". Migrate your settings files (Bookmarks, Saved Passwords, etc) over one by one, checking each time to see if the problems resurface. If you do find a particular profile data file is causing a problem, file a bug and attach the file.

This one solve my problem:

Go to "View -> Toolbars -> Customize" and make sure that the "Bookmarks Toolbar Items" icon appears on the Firefox toolbar, as shown here. If the "Bookmarks Toolbar Items" icon is missing from the toolbar, drag the "Bookmarks" icon from the "Customize Toolbar" window to the Bookmarks toolbar. Note: There may be two different "Bookmarks" icons in the "Customize Toolbar" window; the other one is a Star and was introduced in Firefox 3 is for the Bookmarks sidebar (same as using Ctrl/Cmd+B).

Bookmarks don't appear in the Firefox Bookmarks drop down like they used to?

They do but it depends on how you add them to your bookmarks. I personally find the fastest way to add a new bookmark and get it to where I want it to be is to drag it there.
At the beginning of each website address (in the address bar) there should be an icon. You can click and drag this icon and place it in your bookmarks bar or in your bookmarks menu.

If you want to order/sort your existing bookmarks you can also use the bookmarks menu which can be accessed through the top option upon clicking open the bookmarks tab.

I hope this helped, if not please let me know what other information you would like and I'll try and help you as best as I can.

Make sure that toolbars like the "Navigation Toolbar" and the "Bookmarks Toolbar" are visible.
  • Firefox menu button > Options
  • View > Toolbars (press F10 to display the menu bar)
  • Right-click empty toolbar area
Use Toolbar Layout (Customize) to open the Customize window and set which toolbar items to display.
  • check that "Bookmarks Toolbar items" is on the Bookmarks Toolbar
  • if "Bookmarks Toolbar items" is not on the Bookmarks Toolbar then drag it back from the toolbar palette into the Customize window to the Bookmarks Toolbar
  • if missing items are in the toolbar palette then drag them back from the Customize window on the toolbar
  • if you do not see an item on a toolbar and in the toolbar palette then click the "Restore Default Set" button to restore the default toolbar setup

Setup Menu

If you can't remember where you filed that one bookmark, search for it directly from the address bar. Type the name of the bookmark and look for the [STAR] icon next to the results that appear, which indicates matches from your bookmarks.
You can also see all your bookmarks in 3 places:
  • Bookmarks bar: The bar is docked under your address bar by default for easy access. If you don't see it, you can find it by opening a new tab. To toggle the display of the bar, just press Ctrl+Shift+B
  • Bookmarks menu: Click the Chrome menu on the browser toolbar and select Bookmarks.
  • Bookmark manager: The bookmark manager makes it easy for you to organize bookmarks. Click the Chrome menu on the browser toolbar and go to Bookmarks > Bookmark manager.
Use bookmark folders to keep your bookmarks organized. To create a folder, right-click the bookmarks bar and select Add folder.
Hope this helps!

How do I reinstall Mozilla toolbar, please ?

well a tool bar isn't somethign that you just reinstall. most likely you just have if turned off.

Try going to view, then toolbars, and check which ones have a check mark next to them. you almost always want the navigation, and most people like having their bookmarks there also.

I delted toolbars to make my window bigger and now I can't get the toolbars back. I don't have anything to click on - just the windows that are open.

The Firefox "menu bar" includes dropdown menus for various tasks (including "File", "Edit", etc.). If the menu bar does not display, press the "Alt" key (if you are using Windows). That will restore the menu bar temporarily. To restore it permanently, go to the menu bar and select:
View > Toolbars > Menu bar

The Firefox "navigation toolbar" includes the "back", "forward", "reload" buttons, and the address bar (where you type a web address). If the navigation bar does not display, go to the menu bar and select:
View > Toolbars > Navigation toolbar

The Firefox "bookmarks toolbar" displays frequently used bookmarks. If the bookmark toolbar does not display, go to the menu bar and select:
View > Toolbars > Bookmarks toolbar
