I have the same issue, and found what should be the ' @ ' key has been programmed with ' " ' in its place ' @ ' can now be found using shift and the number 2 key, what would normally be ' " '. I was having to copy and paste in @ for ages before I realised as the screen's so tiny I couldn't see that """""!

Dell Inspiron 9100 3.2 gig. I was having the same problem with @ and the quotation mark. I thought it was a keyboard problem and needed to buy a new one, but this is not always the case. I began to experiment by first going to "Regional "Languages" in control panel then chose "United Kingdom" and "United States" and voila it got fixed. Now when I press "shift" and "2" I get the @. and when I press "shfit" and "the apostrophe" key I get the "quotation mark." Problem solved! So before buying a keyboard try changing the options for the English language

The most likely problem is the keyboard. You can try to have the keyboard connector reseated. If that doesn’t work, you’ll need to have the keyboard replaced. If you want to try to do this yourself, here’s the procedure:

Remove the AC power and Battery.

Open the LCD open.

Insert a small flat head screwdriver into the notch provided on the left end of the keyboard bezel to pry it up from the chassis.

Lift and remove the keyboard bezel from the chassis.

Lift to disconnect the indicator cable and release the connection from the system board.

I am setting up a new Dell with Windows Premium. When I use WORD 2000, there are 5 keys on the keyboard that do not produce the character on the key. When I call Dell, they say they will charge me $129 to...

If those 5 keys produce "other" graphics, then look on your keyboard for the 'ALT GR' key, just to the right of the space-bar.

Hold-down the ALT-GR key.
Press one of those 5 keys.
Release the ALT-GR key.
What graphic is displayed?

The left key on my dell touchpad is not working

Hello,

that part of the touch pad is not working anymore, its faulty and you need to replace the whole touch pad.

I don't know why this is mostly common with Dell. My friend has a Dell inspirion 1501 and the touch pad has exactly the same problem as yours.

I would advice you get a USB mouse to keep you going pending the time you get the touch pad fixed.

I wish you the best of luck.

My inspiron keps missing some characters when i type ...is very annoying whn typing in passwords as you cant see what has been missed....works better with some programs...was really bad with yahoo...

Keyboard specially in laptops are connected to the main board via very tin flex wire underneath the keys, sometimes because of the frequent used and hard on pressing the keys, this flex can be easily damaged

I suggest you bring it to the service center and have it check

Asus X58Cseries with Windows Vista Basic has $ sign on 4 key but no pound sign. Any way of getting it? If not, I can live with it but would like to know either way.Cheers, Linda.

I'm an Asus X58C user in the UK and my keyboard is the same. I've not found an easy solution. The only way I can insert a £ character is this. Place your coursor where you want the character. Turn Numbers Lock on using the blue Fn and NumLk keys. Hold down the Alt key and then using the blue numbers keys type 0163. Release the Alt key and the £ character will appear. Turn Numbers Lock off using the blue Fn and NumLk keys again. Its laborious but it works, its how I typed it here. I also found out that if you hold down Ctrl and Alt and then press the 4 key, you type the euro character €. Hope this helps

I had the same problem. When I pressed shift and that comma key I got a " instead of a @.

I looked to see what on the leyboard you normally press to get a " and that's the number 2 key.

Tried pressing shift and the 2 key and hey presto, I got a @.

So it looks like @ and " have swapped places.

So shift and 2 for a @!

Recently, numbers 1 to 4 on keyboard won't work.

This is only a --temporary-- solution.
I have the same problem, with only the numbers 5 and 6 working. My temp solution is to use the character map, located at START -> Programs -> Accessories -> System Tools -> Character Map. If you don't have one, you can do a search to download a free one.
