You may try "Last Known Good Configuration"

Boot the operating system with the “Last Known Good Configuration” feature. To use this:

  1. Restart your computer.
  2. When you hear a single beep or after the bios has read your hardware settings press [F8], this will display the “Windows Advanced Options” menu.
  3. Select Last Known Good configuration and press enter key.
Let me know.

Thanks.

Unit wont start, gray screen then goes to a screen with options on how to start unit and then goes blank

Answer:To load the last known good configuration in Windows 2000 / XP reboot the computer and as it's booting booting press and hold your "F8 Key" which should bring up the "Windows Advanced Options Menu" as shown below. Use your arrow keys to move to "Last Known Good Configuration" and press your Enter key.
Trouble Getting into Windows 2000 or Advanced Options menu - If after several attempts you are unable to get into Windows 2000 or Windows XP Safe Mode as the computer is booting into Windows turn off your computer. When the computer is turned on the next time Windows should notice that the computer did not successfully boot and give you the Safe Mode screen.
Note: With some computers if you press and hold a key as the computer is booting you will get a stuck key message as the computer is booting. If this occurs instead of pressing and holding the "F8 key" tap the "F8 key" continuously until you get the startup menu.

Windows Advanced Options Menu
Please select an option:
Safe Mode
Safe Mode with Networking
Safe Mode with Command Prompt
Enable Boot Logging
Enable VGA mode
Last Known Good Configuration (your most recent settings that worked)
Directory Services Restore Mode (Windows domain controllers only)
Debugging Mode
Start Windows Normally
Reboot
Return to OS Choices Menu
Use the up and down arrow keys to move the highlight to your choice.
As can be seen from the above example, you should be able to highlight and press enter to load the last known good configuration. Once completed the computer should restart and attempt to load into Windows.
Will running the Last Known Good Configuration delete anything?
No, running the last known good configuration will restore your last good system settings and will not delete anything. The only thing you may have to reinstall programs you have recently installed because the configuration for those programs may have been lost.

Windows xp safe mode stuck at mup.sys. Please help. Thanks.

If you are having a problem booting safemode then Windows is corrupted and will need to be repaired/re-installed. You can insert the windows xp disc and re-boot the computer. It should ask you to boot from cd-rom drive. If it does not you will need to change the boot sequence in the BIOS for the cd-rom to be the firsst boot device. Once you are able to boot the Windows cd you can try to repair the windows installation if the repair does not work you will need to format and re-install windows. hope that helps.

Pavilion a622n restarts during boot process

First step is to get to the Safemode menu. (usually done by pressing F8 during startup but before the Windows XP screen). Select "Disable automatic restart on failure" (Something like that - I can't remember the exact verbage. That way when it crashes you will get the blue screen error and it will stop. Then you can further diagnose what is going on. Post back what it says...

Video Drivers

The file “Windows/System/Drivers/mup.sys” is not actually causing the problem. It’s the next step after mup.sys that’s causing the computer to hang. That next step consists of the OS checking the registry files for plug and play devices.
Some causes are: new or defective hardware installed, corrupted registry, (caused by virus), defective or corrupted hard drive, just to name a few.
Try removing all devices attached to the computer like printer, web cam, flash drives, etc.
If your computer has a PCI or AGP graphics card AND your motherbrd has a VGA connector, remove the video card and use the one on the motherbrd.
If the above doesn’t work, try running “CHKDSK /P” from the Windows recovery console.

Emachine trouble

There are several causes that are common.
The first, especially with e-machines, is they do not like service pack 2 updates.
If you have a standard winxp cd you can boot from that and choose repair console once the cd starts to load win xp files.

First, I would attempt to load windows by as it boots, press F8 to go into options, select first LAST KNOWN GOOD Configuration

If that doesn't work then select SAFE MODE.
If you can get in in the SAFE MODE, select ADMINISTRATOR
no password and try and undo changes that were made.
