I had this issue 2 days ago. I tried every technically oriented possible solution. However, what actully worked was wiping/cleaning the actual recovery disk. After several attempts at recovering I realized that the error 262 occurs when the optical drive cannot read the information on the cd/dvd. As I stated in the beginning this actually worked. So give it a try. I know it is a no-brainer, but sometimes it is good to go back to the basics.

If no recovery disc, Some newer PC's have the recovery on the hard drive. You can access it at boot up. Before it gets to the windows sign in. I think u need to press F12 as soon as u power on your pc.

How do I restore my computer using the eRecovery Management program outside of Windows? How do I restore my computer using the eRecovery Management program outside of Windows?
Select models, with Microsoft Windows, have the ability to have the Operating System reinstalled from a hidden partition built into the computer.
Note: During the process, all data stored on your computer will be overwritten. This means all your files, such as email and photos, will be erased. Therefore, we recommend making a backup of all personal data before starting the recovery process.
Note: For video guided assistance using the eRecovery Management program to restore your computer please visit our How do I restore my computer using the eRecovery Management program? answer.

To start the system recovery:

  1. Restart the computer.
  2. When the Acer logo appears on the screen, press the Alt and F10 keys repeatedly.
  3. If you are prompted with a Microsoft Windows boot screen, press the Enter key.
  4. After the system recovery application has loaded, follow the prompts to reinstall the Operating System.
If the ability to reinstall from the previous method is not available or fails, recovery of the Operating System will need to be from Recovery Media. If you do not have a set of Acer Recovery Media, you may purchase the set online from the Acer Recovery Media Order Form..
Note: If your computer does not have an internal optical disc drive, an external optical disc drive will be required in order to recover the Operating System using Acer Recovery Media.
  1. Restart the computer.
  2. When the Acer logo appears on the screen, press the F12 key repeatedly to enter the computer's Boot Menu.
  3. Press the CD-ROM drive eject button and insert the disc labeled System CD.
  4. Close the CD-ROM tray.
  5. Refer to on screen instructions to select either CDROM or USB CDROM.
  6. The computer will boot from the Acer Recovery Media
  7. When prompted for the Recovery CD, remove the System CD and insert the Recovery CD.
Note: If there are multiple Recovery CDs, please insert the first of the Recovery CDs.
  8. After the system recovery application has loaded, follow the prompts to reinstall the Operating System.
Note: if your computer is unable to run the Acer Recovery process, or errors occur during recovery, please contact Acer support.

ERROR 1002

This error can occur during a system recovery, and choosing the backup option to an external hard drive. The recovery might stop responding, and an Error 1002 message displays. To resolve the error, follow these steps:
  1. After the error message displays, turn off the computer.
  2. Disconnect the external hard disk drive. The backup is still useable.
  3. To continue the system recovery, restart the computer.
  4. Press F11 repeatedly at startup.
  5. Select Advanced Options , and then select System Recovery .
  6. When given the choice, choose to continue without a backup.
  7. After system recovery is complete, restore files from the external hard disk drive.

Start fresh factory settings

Hi,

There should be a recovery partition on the desktop computers hard drive.
Follow the instructions bellow (or print this page) for a full factory recovery.

  1. Turn off the computer if it is not already off.
  2. Disconnect all connected devices and cables such as the Personal Media Drive, USB drives, printer, and fax. Remove media from drives, and remove any recently added internal hardware. Do not disconnect the monitor, keyboard, mouse, and power cord .
  3. Turn on the computer and immediately press the F11 key repeatedly , about once every second, until Recovery Manager opens.
  4. Click Next . A Microsoft System Restore screen opens.
  5. Select No, I would like to see other options , and then click Next . A System recovery screen opens.
  6. Click Yes , and Next to continue the recovery process.
  7. The Recovery Manager gives you the option of backing up your data files. To do so, read Backing up your files . To continue recovery, select No , and then click Next .
  8. A recovery progress screen opens. Wait while files are restored.
  9. When System Recovery is complete, click Finish .
  10. The computer restarts and continues into Windows setup. Complete the setup screens and wait until the computer finishes the setup. Then, turn off the computer, reconnect all peripheral devices, and turn on the computer.
  11. Before using the computer, update and protect it by reinstalling any virus and security software that was installed before the System Recovery.
  12. Reinstall any software applications that were added after purchasing the computer, and replace any files that were backed up.

Regards.

Not sure how many users on set up on your pc, but if you and your husband have different user accts, yours may not be able to restore using your log in.

There's a lot of good information and steps to try on the link above. If it doesn't work, you can always try going to an apple store and sitting at the "genius bar" (no kidding...that's what they call it.). Good luck
