Had dual boot with linux, lose my XP. I have the 5 cd recovery disk, but I can not install my XP back.

  • Hello charlieri_1, this happens often when installing 'new' OS, especially when creating a "Dual Boot." What you will have to do is a "Clean Install" starting from scratch; unfortunately! You will have to use the "Recovery Disk" to install Windows XP, first! Next, after you have restore the XP [OS]; then you will install the more "Updated" OS, [Linux] "This is just the Operating System way of order; oldest first, latest last, to properly install the OS. Hope this helps you, thanks paul7of9."

Hi, I am having a HP workstation XW4100 Base unit previously i was using Linux on this machine now want to change the OS has Windows XP with SP2

You need a Windows XP installation disk and the product installation code.
When you boot up with the Windows installation CD, you will be given an option to delete the existing partition, Do this and then create a new partition, then do a NTSF format NOT a quick NTSF format then complete the installation.
After you install SP2 then install SP3, this is the latest service pack and corrects some bugs.

Installed ubuntu 9.10 now can't boot XP. Black

Now that you have installed ubuntu which is linux did you make your pc able to do dual boot. It is possible you have overwriten some important files like master boot record while doing ubuntu installation. Most times blinking cursor means no hard drive or operating system. you can try poping in XP cd and try to do recovery if you have it. Also easiest would be if you could boot into safe mode and try to fix the issue by replacing missing or corrupt files.

yeah it should be okay, just get a linux cd like susie or ubunto and makesure you have another partition to run it on , however you can run it without installing it just playing it from a CD. I suggest you go to this link for more info:

boot to win98 operating system. Insert the XP operating CD. IT will automatically open a window asking you to select Install winXP prof. It will ask for new installation and Upgrade (recommended)

select upgrade and select next and follow the instructions. it will restart and ask you select the os.
select xp in blue screen. install the OS other than C Drive.

please don't ever install in c drive.. do with caution.

Enjoy.

BIG BOOT PROBLEM!!!!

You should have erased the system root directory,( the Windows XP installed drive). the boot sector still has the winxp boot information, but does not finds any file on the drive, were they are supposed to be.

You have to Install a fresh copy of winxp, with the winxp boot cd.

Dual boot

hi wtm78 this is nichu,
it is impossible to install win 98 after installing xp,if you want to install win98 you must remove the winxp and then first install win98 and later you can install winxp,
basically it is impossible to install a lower order software when xp is already installed,in your case it is the same
there will be no things like dual boot or anything ,after booting your system asks whether you want to work with win98 or winxp.
be cool.

take care
bye and have a nice day.
