You say Windows, but not which version. Regardless, the "blue screen of d??th" is a mighty frustrating issue. There are ways that can help isolate the cause, but they are complex and require additional software. The two things that most often cause crashes are intermittent hardware faults and defective or incompatible drivers. Check to see if you have recently updated and of the component drivers. If so, use the "rollback" feature to go back to the previous driver and see if that helps. Unfortunately, often the only way to solve these problems is to reload the OS. If you can still access your system, now is a good time to back up all your data that you don't want to lose in case the system crashes hard and you need to reformat and reload.
You have to be sure the computer has the correct software to recognise the hardware and can work with it. From Windows 7 and up, for all hardware that is certified with Microsoft, you can download the drivers from Microsoft. Lots of hardware is recognised when connected and will initiate a download from Microsoft. But not all hardware will do so and not all hardware is compatible (same as not certified by Microsoft from Windows 7 and up) with the new operating systems.
Most things that worked fine with Windows XP and or Vista, can fail with Windows 7 and 8, because the factory that made the hardware in the first place does not ask for certification with Microsoft for their old Hardware. They only spend time and money to get their new hardware certified on the new operating systems.
So to make sure your hardware is compatible with the OS. Check the manual and find out, what you have to do so it will work on your computer.
If your device was working on a USB2 port, it also should work on an USB3 port, on the same computer. But don't expect another speed, because the slowest part decides the speed.
Go to "Device Manager" and look for anything that has a yellow question mark. If you see this, you need to run the set up program for that device to install the driver/.inf file and let the setup program set other parameters.
Since you reformatted, you removed all your previous settings unless you backed those up previously. If it came with the laptop from the store, it should have come with a CD or DVD rom with the install program.
If you lost that, or cannot find it, go to the Sony website, select "support" and locate that driver or set up program and download it. Make an archive copy of it in case it is needed in the future. The device manager should identify what model of tuner card you have.
You forgot to sysprep the OS before removing the old board. Put the drive back on the old board and CPU and let it boot up. now sysprep the drive THEN re-install the new board and CPU To sysprep the drive, do the following:
>There is a SYSPREP tool on the XP CD.
>You may need to extract files from the Windows XP CD, files are located at CD:\SUPPORT\TOOLS\ in a cab file called DEPLOY.CAB. The files are Sysprep.exe and Setupcl.exe.
>With the old motherboard still intact:
>You run sysprep and "RESEAL" Windows XP.
>Then you put the new board in, and it re-activates Windows XP and populates the device manager list.
>You do need to re-activate with the same key-code, and if you exhaust that number of activations, it will prompt you to call Microsoft and you get a new release key at no cost from them over the phone.
The basic problem here is that when windows goes to initialize the old hard disk controller, it loses the hard disk because the controller isn't the same. It may also be crashing as it tries to initialize other hardware, but it needs that IDE or SATA (or SCSI) controller online even to get into safe mode!!
Good luck - sysprep works about 90% of the time, but if you run into problems, it can be a real bugger to untangle!

reformat your system.. always partition your hdd into 2 parts,, the os on one partition and your files on another,, so that anytime your system is in trouble,, you can reformat it without worries... there must have been a virus in your system or there was something wrong in the installation of your os.. if this doesn't work,, maybe it is a serious hardware problem...
