Before recovery, you should know that yourphotos are not erased actually. It stored on CF card as a file. When you formatthe card or deleted photos from the card, the data on which the images werestored is not deleted. Canon rebel xt error messages

error 99 can most times be remedied by taking a standard pencil eraser and carefully cleaning the gold contacts at the back of the lens and the gold maching contacts in the lens opening of the camera... BE CAREFUL not to let eraser crumbs into your camera... keep it clean... reset the battery and give it a whirl.... did it solve the 99 issue?
for the CF it refers to the cf card... here's what I've found on this:
Canon reports that this error code may appear on your digital camera’s LCD (liquid-crystal display) when there is an error reading from or writing to the inserted CF (CompactFlash) card. This error code occurs most often after a user has tried to eject a CF card before the camera has finished writing data to the card.Solution:
Canon suggests that you first try to use a different CF card. If you do not see the error message when you use the new CF card, the first card is probably damaged.

Before you take the next step, drag the files from the CF card to a location on your hard drive to back up the files. Next, you can use Windows’ ScanDisk utility to check the CF card for errors. If you use a Mac, you can use Disk Utility (in Applications\Utilities\) in OS X.

If ScanDisk or Disk Utility fails to resolve the CF card problem, insert the CF card in your camera again. Then format the CF card. On most Canon cameras, you can do this by pressing the Menu button, selecting the Format tab, highlighting Format, selecting Format, and choosing Yes. Make sure you have backed up the data on the card before you do this. Formatting the card will delete the images from the card. After you format the card in your camera, use ScanDisk or Disk Utility to check the CF card again. If you still encounter errors while using ScanDisk or Disk Utility, you should discard the CF card because it is damaged.

If the error still occurs after following the steps above, your camera may need repair. Contact Canon’s technical support for further assistance.

hope this solves your issues....

I lost my manual ...red light is flashing near compact flash card opening

PDF here.

If that little red light (just below the 4-way control) is flashing it is indication the camera is attempting to communicate with the CF. if it never quits, most commonly the culprit is an unformatted, or corrupt/damaged CF card. Replace the card, and reformat in the camera.

any images on old CF MAY be recoverable with a card reader on your PC, but the camera will not read them. Reformatting will destroy the existing images.

My CF card can't be read

if you have a lexar card, there is a program called lexar image rescue, it will recover pictures from the card even if its damaged. If its another brand of card, there are many programs available for a price that will recover data from a dead cf card.
http://www.cardrecovery.com/ this is a good one available for 40 bucks.

CF Card is not being read, Canon Digital 350D EOS Problem

It does not sound good. You might want to get a flashlight or similar and look into the memory card slot to check the connector pins in the camera. They may be bent or damaged.

Image upload

??? These cameras take standard CF cards (and store images in standard JGP format) that can be 'read' directly by PC's with a multi-media card slot.

If your PC does not have a card slot, you can buy a USB CF Card Reader/Writer for a few dollars ..

PS always reformat the CF cards in the Camera not the PC ..

Memory card not reading in canon a75

So as not to spoil your vacation, go buy yourself a new compact flash card locally. They should sell them anywhere electronics are sold, including WalMart, etc. See if you can get this new card to work in your camera. If so, then you can work on trying to get your current CF to work, by trying to format it in the camera. If you can't get a new CF to work in the camera, then you likely damaged either the pins in the CF socket in the camera, or some switch that is pushed when the card is inserted (to tell the camera there is a card in it). It is unlikely you will be able to have this fixed during your vacation, unfortunately.

My CompactFlash card is no longer recognized by my computer (Sony Vaio notebook w/Windows XP home edition)

It isn't clear from your description, but are you inserting the reader into your USB port, and *then* inserting the CF into the reader? If so, try reversing this -- insert the CF into the reader, then insert the reader (with the CF) into a USB port. It is possible that your PC is only looking at the reader once (when it is inserted) and not finding a CF, then ignoring the CF once you insert it. If your camera can read and write to the CF, then it is unlikely that the CF is damaged. Since you have determined that the reader is ok, and since your PC recognises the reader, it is unlikely that it is a USB driver problem. Similarly, it is unlikely that it is a physical problem with the USB port, or the pins in the reader or the CF card.
