Question about Dell Inspiron 2650 Notebook
I ran a file recovery tool and found 34,000 deleted files.Does this clarify my problem.
A file recovery tool will find everything on the hard drive that has not been completely overwritten. I have seen systems with more files than this found after deleting all their temporary internet files. So ... 34,000 deleted files really does not tell us anything because maybe they are suppose to be deleted. This is what I suggest you do -
BACK UP ALL YOUR DATA !!!
1) Click on My Computer, now right click on your C: drive and select properties. Click on the Tools tab. In the Error-checking section, click on Check Now. Place a checkmark next to Automatically fix file system errors and Scan for and attempt recovery of bad sectors and then click Start. It will complain about needing exclusive access and do you want it to run on the next reboot, answer yes and reboot your computer. Your drive will be checked for error and if there are any, it will try to fix it.
If it reports unrecoverable errors it may be time for a new hard drive.
2) After all this, if you still have a problem. Click on Start, Run. A little windows will open, please type "sfc /scannow" without the " ". The system will now be checked for missing or corrupt windows files, it will probably ask you for the installation to disk. I recommend doing windows updates after this.
3) If this does not work, boot to the windows cd and proceed as if you were installing windows. It should find the existing installation and ask you if you want to repair it, answer yes.
4) Still have a problem? It may be that you have managed to catch some sort of malicious program. You can try booting the computer to safe mode (F8 right after powering up the system) and see if it is any better but a lot of the nastier programs will run in safe mode. Try doing a clean install of windows.
If after all this you still have a problem, the chances are you have a hardware problem.
