Can't extract files on System Recovery Disc 4 for Compaq Presario model 6350US

All of a sudden my Compaq Presario would not boot. I attempted to do a recovery with my set of five System Recovery Discs. But after I inserted Disc #4, I started getting error messages indicating "problem with extracting. . ." a number of files on that Disc. These were all files relating to windows\I386\MSA...

I ran the Recovery Discs no less than 6 times, trying both the full recovery and the standard recovery, and each time it "stalled" at Disc #4 when the errors messages started popping up.

Is there a problem with the Recovery Discs, and how do I work around this?

Thank you. I inserted Disc 4 into another computer and didn't have a problem seeing the contents using File Manager. I'll try to make a copy of it and try the recovery process again.

good news! I think my Windows XP has been re-installed! I made a coy of disc #4 on another computer. Then, tried the System Recovery procedure again. The first two times, it stalled at exactly the same spot. When I started the System Recovery procedure a third time, it extracted the previously unextractable files. There were four other files that it couldn't extract, but from the names they did not appear to be essential application files - and most importantly, the procedure didn't stall out.

Thank you PABLOCSA for your suggestion.

But now, I have a new question. Before the computer started to reboot from the newly installed files, it automatically went into a check disk mode, and indicated 4 sectors were bad. Then it rebooted normally (after taking me into a couple of set up screens to input time zone, name, etc.). Does this mean my hard drive is failing? and could this have been a reason why I had trouble running the System Recovery discs?

My disc drive has stopped working. I have carried out a full recovery, because of other problems, but it still doesn't work. Can I download a driver, just in case I have deleted something by accident?

At this point, you can try to clean your disk # 4 and see what happen,
or try to make a copy of disk # 4 (if you can copy the disk) and try again.

or

1) Contact your customer support and ask for a new set of disks.(or only # 4)

or

2) Boot your computer with another OS disk (win XP)

or

3) Boot your computer with some utility disk

    1) I'm glad to hear that your problem was fixed.

    2) About your question,

If you have some bad sectors on your hard drive, does not affect at all your hard drive performance at least that you have all the drive bad or fully of bad sectors.

For that reason is recommendable to run scandisk, who detect those sectors and fix them (when it is possible).

In your case, I think that your problem is most related to a drive lector failure or a bad cd disk instead of those bad sectors.

Let me know if you have further questions
    Have a great day!

Most PC's built in this time frame no longer shipped with a separate set of recovery CD's. Instead, the manufacturer provided a separate partition on the hard drive that contained the recovery program. To access this program, you would first shut off the system and disconnect all peripherals other than your keyboard and mouse. Then start the computer, pressing the F10 key on your keyboard repeatedly as the HP/Compaq logo appears. A recovery menu would appear, giving you the option to perform either a standard recovery or, under the Advanced options, a destructive recovery. The standard recovery will attempt to repair the system, leaving any of your data files intact. The destructive recovery option erases everything, then restored the computer to its original, out of box configuration.
Unfortunately, the recovery partition is on the hard drive itself, so if your problem is due to a hardware failure rather than simply a software crash, the above steps will not work. If this is the case, you will need to contact HP/Compaq and request a restore CD. The following link will take you to their website, and walk you through the process of determining if a set of recovery discs are available for your PC. Select your operating system from the drop down menu and then follow the link labeled Recovery Media.

I hope this helps!

Issues with some programs and not able to backup. So I tried to do a restore(not a full recovery). Now it goes to a DOS screen and displays:"NTLDR is compressed, press CTRL + ALT + DEL to restart and it...

Boot from your Windows installation disk and try to repair the Windows installation. NTLDR means NT Loader,it's the primary boot file for your OS.
You can repair if it can,or re-install.Just don't reformat during the process or it will wipe everything off your HDD partition.

When i tried to start windows i get this error message every time ''windows failed to load because the system registry file is missing, or corrupt'' , i have a compaq presario vs210us... Can any tell me...

What OS are you running? For XP and Win2000, get the OS install or upgrade disc for your version of Windows. Boot from the CD. (F12 just after the POST will let you choose the boot location. Try again if you miss the timing.)

Enter the recovery console and try to restore the old registry. See http://support.microsoft.com/kb/307545 for the XP commands involved.

Windows 7 install discs also have some recovery options when you boot from the CD/DVD as a LiveCD. But it is called the System Recovery (you can build your own System Repair disc with a working version) See the following for more information:
http://www.sevenforums.com/tutorials/668-system-recovery-options.html and then System Restore:
http://www.sevenforums.com/tutorials/700-system-restore.html
Vista has something similar but didn't have an option for building a System Repair disc to my knowledge.

You might lose some registry information (depending on how often you had the system backup the critical information). These methods basically roll back to a previous version.

Good luck.

You could have a Boot Sector Virus. you would need to run anti-virus software to try and remove this issue. I would recommend Avast or AVG. I have attached a link of website that microsoft recommends. http://support.microsoft.com/kb/49500/EN-US/

Compaq Presario CQ60 recovery disc how to use

insert the disc into the drive, restart the computer. If it doesn't boot from disc, restart again.
As it restarts, press and hold F8(may be F2 or F12 depending on the settings)until the boot options screen appears. Using the arrow up/down keys select drive "d" or what ever drive letter represents the drive you put the disc into.
It will now(or should) continue to boot from the disc, follow the onscreen instructions to restore.

Hi John.

F11 process is not working and you get a NTLDR missing when you turnon the notebook.

Steps to be performed:
1. Perform hard drive self test from BIOS.
2. If it is passed then use retail version of operating system disk to install XP or try using new recovery disks which nay cost you $15.00.

In your notebook model this issue appears if there is any issue with the hard drive.

Since there is no CD in the drive the computer is attempting to boot of the hard drive and not finding the files it requires (unless you have it set to boot off a USB device before the hard drive).
You cannot simply use the recovery disk from one system on another because these disks install drivers specific to the hardware of the computer for which it is intended.
You need to find the CDs that came with this system or contact HP and order them. Please note that running a recovery CD will wipe all your personal data from the system (this may very well have happened already), since this drive will not boot, connect it to another system as a slave or use a USB enclosure to see if there is anything you can salvage.
