Question about Sanyo DS31520 31" TV

1 Answer

Screen split with black bar through center, top of picture shows in bottom

Sanyo DS31650 31" TV On power up the TV screen is split with wide (1/10th screen) horizontal black bar through center of TV. The bottom of the TV video picture appears in the top half and the top of the video picture appears in the bottom half. If I click the menu button half (bottom half)of the menu appears in the upper left corner (approx 1/4 of screen). After about three minutes the TV screen changes to a bright extremely narrow line running horizonatlly through the center of the screen with the rest of the screen black. Audio is normal. Unplugging TV and/or powering on and off occasional brings up a normal screen for about 10 -15 seconds, then the above process repeats. I see no adjustment knobs anywhere on the set.

Re: Screen split with black bar through center, top of...

It sounds as you desribe, the vertical output IC and or the b+ feed capacitor off the Hi voltage transformer feeding the vert. IC its required voltage. Not a really hard job to replace, but not for a handi person to do. This should be left to the professional, as there are no user serviceable parts inside this set and with the HI voltage and the safety issues its best to call somesone to assist you with this repair. Good Luck

How do I change it from wide screen to regular? I have a black area above and below the picture.

You can set the picture size by remote control itself.

You can vide 480i format programmes in three picture sizes. 4:3, 16:9, and ZOOM
You can change the picture size by pressing the PICTURE SIZE button on the remote control.
4:3 Picutre size
To fill the screen, the top and bottom edges are extedted more widely, although the center of the picture remains near the former ratio.
If receiving a 4:3 programme, the image size is displayed in its originally formatted proportion.
16:9 picure size
This image displays the size of standard 16:9 with black bars at the top and bottom.
If receiving a 4:3 programme, the image is displayed with black bars at the top and bottom and stretched wider.

NOTE: If a fixed bar remains on the screen for a long period of time, the image can become parmanantly engrained in the screen and cause subtle but permanent ghost images. Never leave your TV for long periods of time while it is displaying these images.

Zoom picture size [for 16:9 formats]
The entire picture is uniformly enlarged --it is stretched the same amount both wider and taller (retains its original proportion). The right and left edges of the picture may be hidden.

Picture is only in middle of screen, top and bottom of screen is blacked out

If you are watching widescreen format movie or tv programming on a non-widescreen tv, that is how it will appear. The widescreen is a wider picture so to show it on a less wide screen, it has to shrink down to fit. and leave blank space top and botton.

If not, sorry.

Why do we have black bars on top and bottom of screen

Originally when 16:9 TVs were produced movies were being shot in 16:9 so that you had a full screen. Now they are being shot in 14:9 as it gives you a more cinematic experience. This is due to the fact that colours look more vibrant when they are placed against a colourless/lightless surface (such as a black panel) as for the bars on the side of the screen LuciferStarr is correct; it depends on the format in which the video was originally produced. For example most older television shows are still shown in 4:3 but newer shows and movies are produced in the widescreen format.

Your model has a maximum resolution of 720p. What you might want to do is make sure that both your cable/sat box and game stations are outputting at no more than 720 resolution. It's easy to assume that all HDTVs may accept a higher signal, and while they might, some of the scene changes or handshakes may make that operation cause the symptoms you describe.

TV screen

Vertical sweep failure.
It will be an I.C. with a part number that probably starts with an LA_ _ _ _ and be on a heat sink in the vicinity of the connector going up to the yoke. Try replacing that. But first, check all the electrolytic caps around it for testing dry (sorry - takes a special meter to do it in circuit) or just replace them. May have lost power to the I.C. as well. Look the I.C. up in the free NTE crossreference at Get a diagram of its pinout to find what pins the power and outputs are on.
Hope ya fix it!

Greeeting from Belize you are having a problem either with cold solder or a problem in the power supply those lines are hum bars due to a defected filter cap.resolder your power supply if that does not solve the problem then you replace the power supply you can get a power supply kit from in florida.good luck.also make check in the vertical section if you cannot do it your self take it to a qualified tech to resolve your problem this should cost you about $75.00. to get it fix.
