Delete Linux, readd Vista

We're trying to delete Linux on a Windows E-Machine that initially had Windows Vista. We can't find a site that has simple instructions on how to delete Linux- any suggestions?

Also, when the CD for Vista is put in the cd rom nothing happens...

Any suggestions please?

1. Download Gparted from this link- and use it to clear Linux Partitions.
GParted Live is a small bootable GNU/Linux distribution for x86 machine that can be used as a partitioning tool.

2. Use Admin Tools Gold.

When you first turn the computer on, in the top left or right corner it will say "F2 Setup" (its usually an F button and setup, not always F12). You will have to pust the F2 or whatever button before the start up screen goes away. You will probably have to restart it and keep pushing it until it works. The next screen is called the BIOS and tells the computer how to start. Arrow down to a tab that says "boot sequence" or "start up" or something to that affect. there it will have the order the PC boots up. At the top of the list will be a SATA or IDE Hard Drive. You want to move that down and put the CD-Drive at the top (if there are number, the CD-Drive should be 1. it will say at the bottom of the screen how to do this.) then press enter or escape and save the changes. be sure you windows install CD is in the drive. Basically what you just told the computer to do is read the disk before starting Linux. This should let you install windows and follow the inscreen instructions. It is important that after you have installed windows, you restart the computer, go back into the BIOS(with whatever F key it was), and put the hard drive windows got installed on back in the top/1 position. if you only have one hard drive, then it will say so. then exit and restart and it should work. this sounds pretty technical but a computer savy person shouldnt have too much of a problem. it is important not to mess around in the bios because you can mess the computer up if you do. if you are uncomfortable doing this I would reccomend a computer specialist.

Make sure the boot order in the BIOS has the CD drive first.

I removed Ubuntu from a dual Vista/Ubuntu boot system. Now I am left with a free space. When I try to create a new simple volume using Vista Disk Management tool, it comes back with a message "there...

it is very hard for me to help someone that wants to get rid of LINUX :( ...but I'm a proffessional and I'm letting my feelings aside ha!

Firs is your MBR was created with UBUNTU or Windows (in other words when you boot is it a windows menu or a LINUX menu) that lets you choose the boot options? if it's LINUX you have to use a LINUX base partition editor to edit the MBR (the way the system will boot), if it's a Windows MBR then you normally ave to delete the LINUX partiton... (if Windows can not delete it you can use a LINUX base disk partitioner) be extra prudent using disk partition editors, if you do not understand what you do you can LOSE data...

Good luck!

I have a shortcut to an internet site that has somehow had its name changed to a line of ??????? ? ?????????. The computer will not allow me to delete it, stating "the file name or directory name or volume...

run a check disk first, those kind of names is not allowed in windows, so it should pop up some error.
in msdos command prompt:
chkdsk C: /F
(assuming it is in drive C)
It should give you an error, saying the volume is locked, so you need to reboot, during the reboot, it will check the file system.
Still in command prompt, just try to delete the file using:
del "??????????" /F/S/Q
USE the quotes please, or it won't work.

OR... the hardway ;) get a Linux Live CD, mount the filesystem, and delete the file.

Delete update history in vista

To rename the Windows Update temporary SoftwareDistribution directory, follow the steps that are appropriate for your operating system:

Important The following issues occur when you do this: • Updates that are currently downloaded but that have not yet been installed have to be downloaded again by using Windows Update or Microsoft Update. • When you delete the Software Distribution folder, your download history is removed. • If you currently receive updates from Microsoft Update and from Windows Update, you will have to re-select this option from the Windows Update Web site. If you cannot rename it or delete it restart the computer in windows safe mode and delete that folder
