Question about Nikon D80 Body Only Digital Camera

1 Answer

D80 LCD response

You said that the D80 wouldn't show "live" images, only a temporary view of a shot just taken. When I first bought the camera, I didn't have to look through the viewfinder (I could if I chose to) to see what I was shooting. I am sure there was an active display. Now it doesn't work.

Thanks

I, too, am 100% certain that I had "live viewing capabilities" on my d80, and it worked very well up until two days ago. Any sugestions on how to make it work again?

I own a D80 and never thought this was possible and donlt see this in the manual. Further and in my opinion, you are much better off composing shots looking through the viewfiner as with SLR's you see about 90% or more of your actual image area. Also - you can stop the lens down to check your depth of field.

If there was an active display, then there was something wrong with your camera.

The D80 does not have a Live View capability.

Have a canon rebel eos and when I turn the camera on the only ting that shows up on the lcd is the auto description---how do I get it to just show what I want to take a photo of

These cameras won't show the picture on the screen until you've taken the photo, they don't work the same way as point and shoot cameras. So you have to use the viewfinder. Unless your model has live view in which case it's still pretty fiddly and I wouldn't recommend it.

LCD on - view image prior to taking photo

The feature you are referring to is called "Live View mode".

This is NOT available on the Nikon D80, and was only introduced on the D90, which is available now.

Live View mode allows you to use the LCD screen as your view finder instead of using the eyepiece, but unfortunately, this feature is not available in your model.

Monitor does not show images in focus

Impossible. The D80 is an SLR which means there is a real shutter curtain blocking the imaging array, essentially 'blindfolding' the array. It cannot see the image until the shutter is opened. Nikon just introduced a new SLR that can do live view mode, if you want to spend a couple of grand.

New Camera, no picture on screen

This is normal for this camera. Think about it. The CMOS chip can't see through the mirror. After the shot is taken the electronic shutter exposes the CMOS chip and makes an image just like exposing film on a film type camera. Once you get used to it you may like it better. In outdoor or bright light situations it's difficult to view the LCD screen to frame the shot anyway.

You're not nuts. I saw a guy activate live view on the d80 while doing a demonstration on a Youtube tutorial. I just can't seem to find the video nor how to activate Live View on my camera. I think I'll try contacting Nikon directly

Control Panel display no information.

Do you mean the control panel on top or the big LCD on the back?

The display on top should be showing you stuff like the shutter speed and aperture as you take the picture.

The display on the back will not show you the picture while you're taking it. The D80 does not have a Live View capability.

LCD monitor doesn't work

I'm uncertain of your problem, but you are aware that the LCD screen on the D80 doesn't open physically as some do.   Also, you will not see any live images on the screen, only after you have taken a shot.
