Re: sound but no picture
Apparently your TV doesn't support the progressive mode (480p).
You should be able to turn it off by pressing the pause button on the recorder for about 5 seconds, untill it turns off I guess.
Hope it works

It is probably in progressive scan mode - hence why you get no picture. Your TV may not support progressive scan, so you can try the following:
Without a disc inserted, but with player on, press and hold STOP button (on front of unit not remote) for 10 seconds, then release. This should reset the video output of the player back to normal interlace.
I cannot guarantee the success of the outcome, but it seems to be the standard reset solution for this and similar budget priced DVD players.
Fingers crossed that it does not require further action.
If you are using analog video output to connect to your tv set and accidentally selected progressive scan from the setup menu you will loose the analog signal output. Turn the unit on with no dvd inside and after the " no disc" message press stop (on the front pannel button) holding it for about 5 seconds. It will restore the original progressive scan configuration (value= no).
pressing and holding the PAUSE button on the front of the DVD player for 5 seconds. (this is the one that worked for me) Hurray!
pressing the PROGRESSIVE button on the front of the DVD player or P.SCAN button on the remote control to disable the progressive signal.
power off the DVD player and press 369 using the number buttons on the remote control, then power back on the DVD player.
moving the VIDEO OUT switch on the back of the DVD player to the INTERLACED position.
