Hello - Used to be able to write to regular old CDs but now can only write to CD-RWs. Everything sounds right and looks right but there are no files on the disks when you open them! Thanks for your help - Marci

The only discs that a DVD player is guaranteed to read are DVD discs. Support for CD-ROM, CD-R, and CD-RW may be included, but is by no means guaranteed.
CD-R was designed to be read by an infrared 780nm laser. DVD uses a visible red 635nm or 650nm laser, which aren't reflected sufficiently by the organic dye polymers used in CD-R media. As a result, many DVD players can't read CD-R media. Some DVD players come with two lasers so that they can read CD-R.
But as I have already stated that Most DVDs today have the tendency of playing CDs. So if your DVD player is new then it must have that support. Have a look at the quality of your CDs also.
You probably will need to replace the optical drive (CD/DVD drive) in your laptop. Go to Google and search for "Dell Inspirion 6000 CD/DVD drive" to find a replacement. To be sure it's the CD/DVD drive that's defective and not your operating system software, you could also try to boot from a boot-able DVD disk.
If its just a cd rom then it was'nt made to burn cds, if it has cd-rw on the faceplate then it should burn them.Since I cant see it I can only guess. If its a cd rom / cd-rw then try updating your cd drivers this may help. Good luck.
Any laptop cdrom, cd/rw, dvdrom, dvd/rw, or cd/rw-dvd combo will fit in you laptop. All you have to do is remove the mounting hardware from the old one, and place on the new one. They are pretty easy to remove from the laptop, as there is only one screw from the bottom that holds them in.
