Question about Sony KP-61XBR48 61" Rear Projection Television

Popping; sparking of Red Projector to metal frame

Bought this Sony Projection new, but started to crack and pop a few weeks ago. Removed the back and found the Red Projector Unit is arching to the mounting rails from the projector power cable; could this be a bad windings? If so is there a fix or does the entire Project need to be replaced? How much and where can I order one.

Thanks,

Thanks MisterSony, but is there more to your response? What can I do? Do I need to replace the entire CRT? Any ideas for cost of new CRT.

    Thanks,

Sounds like the red CRT has an internal short. Sometimes happens that the picture tubes develop an internal short and cause arcing. I world CAREFULLY disconnect all of the wires to the CRT and see if the arcing goes away. VERY IMPORTANT!!! there is a high voltage wire attached to each pictur tube, usually a red wire that goes to the side of the tube. You can get a shock even if the TV is unplugged, as the tube will hold a charge for years after the power is disconnected. If you don't feel comfortable doing this, DON"T since the shock is powerful enough to stop your heart.

Yes you need to replace the RED CRT but there is more to consider. The arcing may have damaged additional componenst, so there is that cost to consider. A CRT (if available, and some no longer are) will likely run between $150-$200. Second, the CRT which does most of the work generating the brightness is the Green CRT, so if the picture is dim you may be looking at replacing another one (or two) CRT's in the near future. Bottom Line: In my opinion, investing in repairs for this set is risky, but the choice is yours

Loud popping noise and spark coming from red projector

I would guess you have a High Voltage Leak at the Anode Lead Cap where it Mounts to the CRT. This is not a area to mess with You are better off calling a professional to fix it. It may be a little difficult to confirm if it is a intermittent problem.
Hope this helps,

Sony grand wega kf-50we610 red lamp light blinking

The red light means that the prjection bulb needs to be replaced. They ony last about two years depending on hours of use. The low popping sounds as well as fan noise is normal for the Sony projection TV. You can Google the owners manual by entering the brand, model etc. and ask for the owner's manual. I had to go to several sites but eventually found it.

Popping, snapping sound

Hello fulby2001,

Have the CRTs checked for grid to cathode shorts. The CRTs do this (pop and crack) when they have Grid Cathode shorts. I would advise having a qualified TV technician do this for you.

Thank you,

I hop this helps

32 RCA makes popping sounds

It needs a new FLY BACK transformer. That is what you are looking at. The origionals are not made for the set any longer but insist on having a generic on installed by a local TV shop. I just put one into a RCA 31" and it works nice. Don't throw away the TV. Get it fixed. MAKE SURE YOU INSIST THEY USE THE GENERIC ONE! THEY DO WORK!

Panasonic PT-53WX54 What is that popping noise?

A loud popping noise, like a sharp "snap!", is usually caused by high voltage arcing. Somewhere in the high voltage system an insulator may be cracked or loose, such as the plastic around the flyback transformer or one of the rubber cups on a picture tube. When the high voltage arcs, it momentarily drops and the picture could go out for a split second. High voltage is dangerous in projection sets so allow a qualified tech to service it for you.

Flashing color in and out with popping sound

This sounds like the solder joints have cracked on the AFT can inside the tuner, a common Sony problem. Removing the tuner, opening it up and resoldering the grounds and small transformers inside should clear it up.
