Question about Printers & Copiers

3 Answers

I'm having a really difficult time figuring out how to print DVD/CD labels onto disks using my new HP C5580. The direction I've found are really insufficient, compared to the other two printers I've used for this purpose (they were not HPs). Are there comprehensive instructions somewhere in the help menu, or on-line?

I've read the instruction manual. On page 61, it simply states that I should use the software provided with the printer to design a label. That's all the manual has to say about that - no instructions that I've found about how to use the software. I've used applications for other brands of printers to design labels, so I'm familiar with the process.
After poking around the software for a while I found templates for disk designing, but after more searching, and much trial and error I still can't figure out how to use the templates.
    Thanks for any help here.

Okay. I went to HP's website and found further instructions. The disk printing tray has to be inserted in order for Photosmart Studio to allow the user to choose an image to put on the disk, which then opens the disk label design window. This is not explained in the booklet that comes with the printer, or in the pdf instruction manual. HP could make this a lot easier with more detailed instructions.

Just for my reference, can you tell me the name of the cd label software, and the revision level. The template approach is ok, IF you use one of theirs, and modify it. Still need to know the software in use, and the rev though..

Hello,

1) You have to install the printer software
2) After that, use the program provided by HP to design your labels (When you pull it down your CD or DVD tray of the printer the program pop up automatically)
3) After you finish the edition of your label, insert the cd or DVD onto the tray. (You have to put down the tray in your printer) The printer DVD or CD tray is against your printer upside your paper tray, just pull it down.
4) Put the cd tray inside the printer CD/ DVD tray (the tray has a slot, so introduce the cd tray on it)
5) Just hit print from your printer program once your cd has been set onto the printer cd tray.

that's it.

Let me know if you have further questions

Xp-800 cd/dvd printing

The tray is for the DVD or CD itself, not for a label. The printer prints directly on the CD or DVD, you must use ink jet compatible blank disks, the white ones with no printing. You don't need a tray to print the label.

Printing directly onto CDs

Hello,

I'm afraid that is not possible with the printer. You an do cd/dvd labels but you can't print directly onto a cd.

You would need a CD/DVD burner with a Light Scribe capability. You also need special CD/DVD's to use Light Scribe.

Thanks for using Fixya.

PS. Just for additional info, here is a link to support for your printer:

You can't print directly to a CD or DVD. You need to print on a CD or DVD labels and you can find it on a computer store like Comp USA or Best Buy for example.

My hp photosmart c5580 won't print the correct ink color on dvds

Unless a printer is specifically designed to PRINT on CDs or DVDS, that's the problem. Usually a program called "LightScribe" is used to print on CDs or DVDs right in your DVD/CD Drive. For printers, use a Self Adhesive DVD/CD PAPER Label(s) that you can buy in the store. Inserting DVDs or CDs through a printer can really mess them up and Damage the rollers inside!

Please help me. I haven't printed on a CD with my HP Photosmart D5160 in a while and I either can't remember how to do it, or it doesn't like the new laptop.

I spent a week figuring this answer out. First Do not use the supplied software from HP for this, unless simple text is okay for you. I personally found the software to try to do everything, but nothing well. If you have even a modest image application: Gimp, Photoshop, etc, create a new image at 4.5 inches x 4.5 inches. Set the ppi to 150 at least, 300 for High Quality and create you 'label' there, then go to print.
1. in print dialog box choose 'Preferences'
2. then choose 'printing shortcuts'
3. then choose 'print on CD/DVD' (DVD icon)
(confirm in papersize on right that you are printing on a cd/dvd)

4Then pull down your CD/DVD tray flap on the HP printer and load up a CD to print on. Align it to the arrows, then press print.

As long as the image is 4.5" x 4.5" it will fill the DVD perfectly --especially if you download a 'Mask' template from any printer --which you could google to find one, but it is just to give you an Idea of your 'safe print' zones, and will really come in handy for high quality labels-- don't for get to turn off that 'mask' just before saving--if it's black, or better yet, make it white, then when you save the final image it will create a beautiful white circular edge on the image so that you can better preview and so that you won't waste ink!

I have a HP Printer C5500 When I try printing something on the CD/DVD Directly I get a Error saying that the printer doesn't support printing directly on the CD while the Printer is meant to print on...

I'm confused.. Are you trying to print to a CD/DVD Drive? Try the print job again, and choose the C5500 as the print device.. Seems that there may be a problem with the print device set-up , and you may have to delete the printer, and reinstall it.

If the printer is designed to print a label on a CD / DVD. then you will have to use the programs provided to accomplish this, as it requires formatting parameters be sent along with the print request. I.E. You can not cut and paste directly to a CD / DVD printer..

HP C5580 print settings

Hey! I found this in a review site (can't remember)

"If you use Nero 7 Essentials to print CD/DVD labels, make sure you print just the page for the disc, and under print setup make sure you have CD/DVD 120mm under size and CD/DVD tray from source, then under Preferences set your calibration to -0.185" horizontal, -0.182" vertical, and you'll be golden."

I hope it helps!!

I finally figured it out. The default DISC LABEL got set to HP TATTO. It should be PRINTABLE CD/DVD STANDARD. The HP Tatto uses the photo paper tray so the printer wants you to close the DVD tray
