Re: dirt devil purpose for pets vacuum quit working
The motor overheats from the filter being clogged underneath the canister or the canister or both are clogged-without the air flow the motor overheats and shuts off as a precautionary measure.By letting the motor cool off it will start again but will turn off shortly if the filters are not properly cleaned.Hope this helps everyone. The filters will need cleaning. Make sure the entire cone filter has been gently brushed getting rid of all dust. Also check in the main dust channel where the beater bar is. It may well be clogged and best to check the hose too.

Do the directions mean to wash the black sponge or the actual filter? Is the sponge part of the filter or is it trash? Filter F27 Dirt Devil Purpose Cleaner for Pets Upright Bagless Vacuum Model #1LY2108-000 Hello, I would advise you to ALWAYS to FIRST UNPLUG YOUR VACUUM before beginning any service procedure. Typically the top filter of which is the sponge is washable but the HEPA filter is not, it can be brushed off and vacuum off with another vacuum, but the best filtration is to replace the HEPA filter and to wash the sponge filter, if the sponge filter get to bad then replace the sponge filter as well. I had this same problem. All of a sudden it shuts off while vacuuming and then i'd have to wait a while before it would turn back on. Finally it stopped working period. Before going out to buy a new vacuum, I decided to take the thing apart and clean it up really good. That included running a clothes hanger through the tubes to get all the stuck hair out, removing the roller and getting all the hair untangled from it, and rinsing out the air filters (both the sponge and the plastic piece with the paper like filter) with hot water. Then you let the filters dry for a day or two. The plastic/paper filter takes longer to dry so I used a hair dryer. The vacuum itself is not hard to take apart. I think there are only 11 total screws you need to take out. After the filters dried I put them back in the newly cleaned vacuum and it worked like new. I think the main problem was the condition of the filters. They can get pretty filthy over time, which will limit the air flow to the motor. With less air the motor is more likely to overheat and shut off. So keep your filters clean and you shouldn't have any proplems.
