Question about Sears Craftsman LiftMaster Chamberlain Garage Door Opener Wireless Keypad Model 976LM Security+

Cannot program additional remotes to new door opener

The drive/worm gear somehow got "chewed up", so I replaced the motor unit only. The new unit came with a one function remote, with a door control button. I left the old premium control console from the old unit attached to the wall. The remote that came with the new unit is programmed fine. The problem is with programming the two (2) old 3-function remotes to the new unit. I followed the programming directions for additional remotes and cannot get the two old ones to work. When I press the "LEARN" button, the LED light comes on for approximatey 30 seconds and then goes out. The light doesn't blink, nor does the opener light blink. I even tried to erase all codes and still didn't work.

THe old transmitters have a differnt code...more than likely your new one is a riolling code and the old ones are not. They are not interchangeable.

Is the trolley jammed against the bolt just in front of the motor? If so, loosen the chain until the tension is off the trolley and then run the motor until the door is closed. Now locate the up limit on the side of the motor unit and turn this control 2 full turns in the opposite direction of the arrow printed on the cover. Tighten the chain.

Drive/worm gear on liftmaster garage door opener is worn out and no longer driving the chain to open the door. Apparently this gear is a common part and looking for detailed steps on how to replace it...

You did not specify the model of your door opener: However if you got the LiftMaster website you should be able to locate an Owner's Manual for your door opener.

Go here, select your model or series and then on the next page at the bottom right should be a link to the Owner's Manual.

The manual includes schematics, including the assembly of the motor unit.

You might find these illustrated instructions on similar product to be of use.

I had the same problem. In my case the bushing for the main drive gear was worn out. This is just below the sprocket that connects to the chain.
What you should do is remove the chain and see if that sprocket shaft is loose in the bushing. The motor should turn without the chain on.
If this is the case check the plastic gears within the case. If there all chewed up and the bushing is shot you most likely need to replace the unit. If the gear's are still good you can replace the bushing.
I'm not sure how much Sears would charge to rebuild it but it is very possible it would be cheeper then buying a new one

Garage door does not open or close.motor makes a brief noise and chain doesnt move at all

QTIR,

YOU MGHT BE IN FOR A NEW OPENER OR AT LEAST A REPAIR BILL. IF YOU CAN CLIMB UP AND TAKE YOUR REMOTE WITH YOU. LOOK ON TOP OF THE OPENER AND LOOK WHERE THE CHAIN WRAPS AROUND THE DRIVE SPROCKET. STAY BACK A LITTLE AND PRESS THE REMOTE AND SEE IF THE SPROCKET MOVES A LITTLE. LISTEN FOR THE NOISE YOU TALKED ABOUT,IF IT'S COMING FROM INSIDE OF THE HOUSING OF THE OPENER IT'S PROBABLY THE DRIVE GEAR INSIDE THE OPENER. THEIR IS A WORM GEAR INSIDE THE OPENER THAT SOMETIMES IS MADE OF A PLASTIC RESIN OF SORTS. IT'S NOT REAL HARD TO FIX IF YOUR MECHANICALY INCLINED. IF NOT THEN YOU WILL HAVE TO CALL A REPAIRMAN. TO FIX IT YOURSELF IS A MATTER OF TAKING THE OPENER UNIT DOWN AFTER DISCONECTING IT FROM THE TRACK AND OPENING IT UP. YOU WILL SEE THE DRIVE SHAFT AND GEARS. YOU'LL HAVE TO TAKE OUT THE PARTS DAMAGED AND GET NEW ONES FROM THE MANUFACTURE. I HOPE THIS HELPS EWE OUT,MAY GOD BLESS YOU AND GOODBYE.

Chamberlain Whisper drive remote control unit not working

THE NEW REMOTE MAY NOT BE THE CORRECT SYSTEM FOR THE UNIT YOU HAVE.
THE ONE THAT DOESN'T WORK MOST LIKELY NEEDS A NEW BATTERY.
NOTE IT MUST BE REPROGRAMED AFTER CHANGING THE BATTERY

HOPE THIS HELPS

I had the same problem. Took the cover off of the opener and found that the gears were stripped on the unit. Motor was fine. You can order gear replacement kit for the unit. They are a plastic type sprocket and worm gears. The kit comes with spindles and all necessary clips. You have to take the unit off the ceiling to replace the gears, but the process if very easy to do. Parts kit about $40 on line, much cheaper than a new door opener. Total process took less than 2 hours, including getting the unit down and back up again.

Chamberlain Power Drive 1/2 HP - motor runs but does not move chain

I have the same problem. I just removed the cover and discovered a nylon gear had been worn out. I found lots of shavings inside the cover. The nylon gear is beneath the exterior chain gear. I am looking for information on how to replace it, if I can find the part. If you decide to look at yours, unplug the power and remove the sheet metal screws securing the bottom portion of the cener cover to the front and back covers. Then just remove the upper screws from the center cover. Good luck.
