Question about KitchenAid Dishwashers

Open Question

KitchenAid KUDMO1TJ has a humming sound and think the motor or pump is locked up. how do i check if this is the problem? The dishwasher fills, heats, and drains without ever washing/spraying the dishes. The dispenser still has soap in, the lid does open. I would like to know how to remove the pump. Please give us your expert advice.

gagaweaver, couple of things you want to check here. Check the upper spray arm for any clogged holes or cracks along the edges. Position it in the 12:00 position and run the dishwasher for a little, open the door and verify that it has rotated. Make sure the water entering the dishwasher is min. 120 degrees, use a thermometer. Makes sure that there is no large pans or dishes blocking the upper spray arm from spraying onto the inner door. If all that checks out. You will have to remove the lower spray arm, filter cover and chopper cover to make sure the chopper screen is not coated or plugged up. If it is, it will prevent a good flow of water to the upper spray arm. Catriver..post back.

SOURCE: Dishwasher leaves soap in dispenser.

Hi Dirty Dish gang.
After having 2 appliance repairmen here, I now have the latest scoop on our dishwasher problems, $200 later!
Los Angeles IS currently having hard water issues. Also, all the new cleaning gels etc. are actually a cause of our dishwasher problems.
So, here is what we need to do:
1. Use Cascade POWDER detergent only.  Make sure is is just "plain" no "scented" or "complete"  or gel, etc. (I have tried a phosphate free powder and gel and this is a cause of our problem as well!) 2. Use Jet Dry in the dispenser (set it to a 2-3 opening) 3. Make sure water is at least 120 degrees 4. Only run dishwasher on "normal" setting.  All others just run it longer, hence causing more water stains. 5. Do not pre-wash dishes! You can knock of chunks with a "non" soapy brush, but don't rinse (the oils actually help to clean the dishes) 6.  Do not wash sponges in dishwasher.
Acid Wash: The repairman just gave my washer an Acid Wash today. It says it is an acid derived from lemon, I got mine from Carters appliance in Torrance, CA for about $19. I am to run a normal cycle with the above mentioned Cascade after this "acid cycle" is finished.
If you are still having problems:
Monthly maintenance: Glass Magic: Buy a box of Glass Magic (near the Cascade)  Use 1 Tbsb in main detergent compartment of dishwasher along with the Cascade, till washer starts working again. White Vinegar: You can run an empty dishwasher with white vinegar once a month.  Fill a bowl with 2 cups vinegar and place on bottom rack.  Then run as a normal cycle...this allows vinegar to disperse slowly.
So far it seems to be working.  Good luck.

is your soap door open when this happens if it is then make sure there's no water or other liquids in the dispenser from loading the washer one tablespoon of water in there will clump up the soap and it won't drop when it pops open

SOURCE: KitchenAid dishwasher soap door won't open

I took the door apart and found the degertent door solinoid looking like it over heated and melted to the cover flap and the insulation. See picture. I can't post pic as the max is 150kb.
I applied power and it only got hot and wouldn't operate.
Next I go to Kitchenaid for a replacement - FREE it should be.

The wash pump and drain pump are different. So it is likely the wash pump is choked and trips or the motor is faulty.

It is likely the flap valve (item 5) or the chopper (item 6) are damaged and could be replaced before you get to the wash motor.

KitchenAid fills and drains but won't wash

With a lot of such appliances, the pump motor runs one way to wash, reverse to pump out. Refusal to do this usually is a loose wire, poor connection in the timer, or a wire on wrong. Check the schematic carefully for that.

Dishwasher starts then pauses and drains.

Fixed! I had the issue where the cycle would start, the KUDS30IXBL8 would hum 4-5 times and then drain. Plastic folk pieces jammed in the disposer. These instructions took a few minutes (only 5 screws and a couple clips) to figure out how to take it apart, and it only took 60 seconds to put back together. It fills up with water then it stops working and you can here a humming soud for about 10 seconds and after it stops

Sounds like your motor is trying to run but can't. Check inside pump for anything blocking impeller. Check if wires are attached to motors capacitor. If all looks good the motor or capacitor are bad.

Dishwasher fills with water then hums

Hello & Welcome to FixYa

When the dishwasher fills then it means that the control and the water inlet valve are fine, hum sound itself indicates that the motor is bad and needs replacement. If you hear a hum sound from the bottom of the unit then it is the motor that is bad and if the hum comes from the control then it is the timer that is bad and needs replacement. Please get back to me if you have any other questions.

The dishwasher fills with water but then hums. Water will drain if cancel button is pushed.

Sounds like something stuck in spray impeller. Remove spray arm and top of motor pump assembly and clean.

Dishwasher not working

Nothing by the sound of it. The humming may mean the main pump is stuck. If you are able, remove the pump & turn the impellor by hand (or screwdriver) just to make sure its free moving. Put it back into machine & see what you get. Could also mean that the capacitor on the main pump (if it is a capacitor start motor) has failed.
