I was using a usb204n hub and I had no problems on connecting equipment. The only problem I was having was a short so, I went and purchased the exact same hub. The new hub is not reconizing my drivers and will not connect any of my equipment. It is not reconing my internet router either but, I can plug the old hub in or plug directly to the usb port and no problems. I am running windows xp service pack 3. What could be the cause? Is the new hub bad or is something else going on?

Connect the device that is working or showing the red light above it to the other ports to see if they will work with that. Most likely, something has shorted/fried/broke in the internals of the device and you will just have to replace with a new device. If you are confident with soldering and have knowledge of how electronics work, you might be able to open the device up and find the short/broken connection. Also, this might be a problem with its connection to the computer. Replace the power cable and cable connecting to the computer first, then try uninstalling and reinstalling any software it came with as well as any drivers.
Before servicing the vehicle, refer to the precautions in the beginning of this section.
NOTE: The wheel bearings are not serviceable. If the bearings are bad, a new hub/bearing assembly must be installed.
Remove or disconnect the following:
Rear wheels

Brake drum, if equipped
Rear caliper and rotor assembly from the hub, if equipped
Hub dust cover
Raise the staked portion of the hub retaining nut with a hammer and chisel.
Remove or disconnect the following:
Hub retaining nut and discard it
Hub and bearing assembly from the spindle
Fig. 2: When installing the new hub nut, be sure to stake it into the notch on the spindle
To install:
Install or connect the following:
Bearing assembly on the spindle. Torque the new nut to 131-173 ft. lbs. (177-235 Nm)
I have had several ports go bad for no apparent reason. its happened on internal and external devices.
Frankly, unless this is a thing of principal for you I would just go and order a new hub from Amazon for a few bucks and be done with it. Even if its under warranty you would probably be required to ship the dead one back so that would cost more than getting a new one.
Just my 2 cents

If you need additional USB ports, the best way to go is to get a USB card that fits into the computer. That way it comes with a CD software program and can be updated. They are now USB 2 configured and work great. I have had to remove a number of USB hubs to fix other computers that have had the same problem. Hope this info is of some help. Bud
Do you have Windows XP and at least Service pack 2 installed.
Service Pack 2 comes bundled with the neccessary drivers for USB 2.0
In device manager under the USB heading you must have:
PCI to USB Enhanced Host Controller
In the list.
im using vista too, when i had 2 hubs only one was working. but i did have the hub plugged into the other hub once i linked it directly to the pc's usb port, it worked... the problem was i wanted that port for an external hard drive, but now i just plugged that into one of the hubs!! problem fixed
I have the same problem with Vista. It comes up as "unknown device" and Vista does not see anything connected to it.
