Question about Akai LCT2785TA 27 in. LCD Television

Will not power-on

17 months old, will not turn on via remote or TV on/off button. Sometimes it makes a sparking-type sound as if it's trying to turn on. Screen remains black as if off.

Not fair to spend $549.00 for a television that only lasted 17 months.

How do I locate and identify the fuse and inverter? Where do I get diagrams?

Is there one of each or more?

    How do I test them?

    Is this a common problem?

Is this something a layperson can do?

If not, what would be the estimated cost, is it worth fixing, and is there a high probability it will happen again?

Heating the back of the TV with a heater actually worked for me. For years I have suffered wuth this issue if I unplug my Bush LCD TV I have to leave it unplugged from 1 to 10 days before it will work again. Today I read this forum and put a heater pointing at the back of the TV for 10 minutes whilst the TV was unplugged from the mains. When I plugged TV back into mains it came to life. I am amazed!

1. Try this - hold the menu button down for 10 seconds. TV should power up; you will have to turn off front panel buttons on menu.

2. You can also try a hard reset: Unplug TV from AC mains and remove all cables from TV. Wait about 30 minutes and re-plug to AC power and redo the cabling. Switch on the TV and see if it works..

3. Powering down the set or putting it in standby may have allowed the power supply to cool. Weak capacitors often go out of spec when they cool, thus preventing a section of the power supply from firing up properly again. There is a simple trick...just warm the back of the TV with a hair dryer for 5-7 mins after you have unplugged the TV. Look for the little areas of holes in the back panel of TV. Use these as your guide at where to use the hairdryer, but don't hold the dryer too close (say 5-6inches away). (Make sure the dryer is on High heat). If the TV doesn't turn on after you have heated it up (like it tries to come on but then turns off) you need to unplug the TV again, this resets it. And repeat those steps till it works. Resetting the TV after it fails to turn on is the key. Also, just leave the TV on. Don't turn in off. Since it is LCD, it doesn't take much power...only a few bucks extra a month for your utility bill.

4. A circuit board may crack about some of the larger components mounted on it. Try the slap test – Hit the TV firmly on the side. If there is any change in the picture, it could indicate a possible solder problem / connections. You can inspect the PCB's for fractures, and then repair them. It may also be poor soldering that has failed. I would be checking for these things first.

Its a power supply problem, check the fuse and the breaker also try plugging it in another electrical outlet if this fails the you know that the inverter board must have being damaged. The best thing to do will be to get a replacement part .thanks and Godbless

these power supply problems were often caused by failed electrolytic capacitors

. The power supply PC board contained several different individual different voltage power supplies.may be the electrolytic capacitors located on the PC board had obviously failed. The tops of these capacitors may be puffed out. Often when electrolytic capacitors fail they get over heated and the top of the capacitor is puffed out displaying an over pressurized appearance. The power supplies on the board is of the switching type
The suspect capacitors can easily be removed.

  • Lack of startup horizontal drive - see the section:Startup problems - nothing happens, click, ortick-tick-tick sound. The main regulator is cycling on overvoltagedue to lack of load.
  • Excessive load or faulty power supply cycling on its overcurrent protection circuit.
  • High voltage shutdown, or some other system detecting an out of regulation condition. However, in this case, there should be some indication that the deflection and HV is attempting to come up - momentary whine, static on the screen, etc.
  • A dried up main filter capacitor or other filter capacitor in the low voltage power supply that is producing an out-of-regulation condition until it warms up. A bad filter capacitor on the output of a series regulator may result in excessive voltage and subsequent shutdown.
  • A problem with the microcontroller, relay or its driver, or standby power supply

Check the fuse and inverter ?

Posted on Oct 18, 2008

  • SAM ANDERSON Oct 18, 2008

You download the manual from the link below if you dont have one

    Manual for akai

From the manual you can get idea about the correct location for fuse and inverter for this particular model . Generally fuse will be at the back cover of the tv .

This problem is common in most of Akai tv .

This steps can be performed by any one .

If your problem still exists then you need to call technican for checking the power board .

The cost will be around $50 for service charge for technican .

  • SAM ANDERSON Oct 18, 2008

Since it is 17 months old it is worth repairing it . It will be mostly the fault of inverter or power board .Once you repair it you will not have problem for atleast 2 - 3 years .

This type of issue is not that really simple. Internal parts are problematic or worse could be busted and needs replacement. Since it's only 17 months old, Warranty is the best solution. Contact the manufacturer of your TV and let them handle it. Provide them with all the details they will ask you, you will need to be patient on this one, like i said, it's not a simple issue...

Basically it sounds like you have no power otherwise because I am assuming you have also tried the power button on the TV itself. Does the light on the TV do anything at all when the power button is pressed?
