What does 20/24 pin refer to in discribing connectors. my existing unit has several leads equaling 24 pins and one solid connecter with only 20 pins. the problem every solid connector is shown w/ 24 pins which would not fit in the 20 pin receptical.

Yes 20 pin connecter power supply is ATX(advance technology extended )power supply and old which was low watt and 24 pin is EATX (enhaunced advance technology extended) power supply is new and high watt so 4 pin connecter can be detached from 24 pin connecter and can be fitted in 20 pin connecter

For the power cables from the Power Supply? Or Power Supply, and Front Panel header on the motherboard?

If you just wish a generic, one-size-fits-all explanation;

A) 20 or 24-pin ATX main power cable.

The older computers use a 20-pin ATX main power cable. As computers needed more power to the motherboard, the 24-pin ATX main power cable was brought out,

B) 4-pin ATX +12 Volt power cable.
Was brought out because Processors needed more power, than the 24-pin ATX main power cable feeding the motherboard, could deliver.

C) 4-pin standard Peripheral power cable
Commonly misnomered as 'Molex'.

Molex was a model name given by the first manufacturer, of this design of power cable connector.
The name stuck. Kind of like referring to an adjustable open-end wrench as a Crescent wrench.

It is also referred to as a 4-pin Standard Peripheral power cable, because there are two styles of 4-pin Peripheral power cables.

Generally used for IDE (PATA) harddrives, and IDE optical drives.


4-pin Small Peripheral power cable,

Older computers used it for power to the Floppy Drive. It's generally used now to provide power for a Card Reader.

Note that both types of connectors use the same power wires, and 2 ground wires.
Yellow is 12 Volts
Red is 5 Volts
Black is Ground

[ Also, in the ATX main power cable:
Orange is 3.3 Volts, the Green wire is the Soft Power On wire. Abbreviated as PS_ON.

Power Supply plugged into power, the Soft Power On wire is briefly touched to ANY Ground wire. This is bypassing the Power On switch.
If the computer (Power Supply) comes on, you have a bad Power On switch.
IF the computer (Power Supply) does NOT come on, you have a bad Power Supply ]

(ALL Black wires are Ground wires. They all lead back to one central Ground point.
ALL power wires lead back to one point in the power supply, for EACH power wire.

The 12 Volt power wires, (Yellow), all lead back to one point in the Power Supply.
This is the 12 Volt power rail.

The 5 Volt power wires, (Red), all lead back to one point in the Power Supply.
This is the 5 Volt power rail.

The 3.3 Volt power wires, (Orange), all lead back to one point in the Power Supply.
This is the 3.3 Volt power rail ]

D) SATA power cable
15-pin power cable for SATA harddrives, and SATA optical drives,

[ The smaller 7-pin SATA connector is the interface cable, or data cable.

IF, you have a SATA harddrive that has a provision for a SATA power cable, AND a 4-pin standard Peripheral power cable, ONLY use the SATA power cable.

It will burn out the harddrive if you use both. It may not do it right away, but eventually it will.
I have had people state over the years, that they were using both power cables. Came back two months later to tell me their harddrives had burned out ]

What pins are the switch to turn on power supply continuously


Pins 16 and 17 for a 24-pin ATX main power cable connector, and Pins 14 and 15 for a 20-pin ATX main power cable connector.

Just remember; The Green wire is the Soft Power On wire, (PS_ON)

ANY Black wire is a Ground wire.

A jumper wire is used briefly to touch the green wire to ANY black wire.

The preferred jumper wire is a paper clip because of it's size. (Diameter)

The jumper wire goes down into the BACK of the connector, RIGHT NEXT TO THE EXISTING WIRE that is already in there.

The BACK of the connector is where the wires go in. (In the links above look at the photo to the far right)

The 24-pin, or 20-pin ATX main power cable, is plugged into the motherboard.
The Power Supply is plugged into power.

The jumper wire goes down into the socket hole, right next to the existing wire, and far down in the socket hole.
It has to touch a metal terminal that is in the FRONT of the connector.
Each wire going into that connector has a metal terminal at the end of it.

Black plastic electrical tape is wound around the middle of the U shaped paper clip.

Use the jumper wire and the Power Supply comes on?
You have a bad Power On switch.

Power Supply does Not come on?
You have a bad Power Supply

I am replacing a motherboard with a G31-M7 TE and find that my existing power supply has a 20 pin plug consistant with the old motherboard but the new one has a 24 pin socket. Why is this and do I need to...


New motherboards have a 24-pin power connector. Here is a diagram of both plugs:

You can see that the two are almost identical. The extra 4 pins on the 24-pin connector provide extra connection points for a few voltages. Newer boards and processors need more current, and the extra pins were added to prevent overloading.

Adapter cables are available to go from your 20-pin power supply plug to the 24-pin motherboard connector. Here's one from TigerDirect, and other vendors have them as well. If you're not making other changes than replacing the motherboard, you shouldn't need more than this adapter.

If you are upgrading your processor along with the motherboard, you should probably replace the power supply too. Older power supplies are often in the 300-watt range, and this is too low for reliable operation with new processors, motherboards and video cards. A new 500 or 600-watt supply is not expensive, and would give you the 24-pin power connection the motherboard needs.

Yes it would likely power a graphics card but not very well. I would suggest at least a 500 watt power supply. and about not having six pin connectors you can get an adapter to convert two molex connectors to one six pin connector.

Wat goes where from the power supply


on the newer psu's (power supply units) they are labeled. if they are not there is a basic rule. if it fits the socket without forcing it, use it there. there are many 4 pin plugs on a psu. these are all identical and all are exactly the same. they can be used anywhere a 4 pin connector is needed. newer psu's also have 6 pin, 8 pin and sata plugs. 6 pin and 8 pin are generally for video cards that are pcix sata pugs are for any sata drive, like a dvd or a hard disk. also there is a 24 pin or a 20 + 4 pin connector. this goes to the mother board.

The extra 4-pin connector should slide into the side of the larger connector. If the leads are the following: black/yellow/yellow/black, then this connector goes on a different location (usually close to the CPU/heatsink assy). Sometimes the PSU will not come equipped with the aux 4-pin that slides in next to the main connector... The computer generally WILL work without this connector, provided the aformentioned connector is connected in the aforementioned slot.

As for the Power Supply 99% sure it is an ATX which as long as you get the same Watt as the existing you will be okay. Make sure you look at your existing connectors to see if you have a 24 pin or 20pin motherboard and 4 pin or 8 pin additional power plug (black and yellow wires) and the new power supply has matching connectors....older ATX supplies have only 20 pins, but there are converters from 20 to 24 pin available.

Watch for the new power supplies and your drive connectors as some of the new power supplies have limited ATA plugs...if you have a lot of ATA devices you might need SATA power convertor plugs or ATA splitters to get all you ATA devices up.

I have an old e machine 500 (origional operating system was windows 98). I am replacing the ATX switching power supply , 230 wat, model lp6100a. My problem is connecting it. I know all the connectors...


The old AT power supply that these old computers uses has two six pin socket connectors and these are different to the ATX connector.
You cannot buy these power supply now, most likely you might find one/computer in a junk shop.
If you have electronic knowledge you might be able to cut off the connectors from the old power supply and connect it to the ATX power supply and modify the ATX power supply so you can switch on the power to the old computer. The old AT power supply uses a mains power switch whereas the ATX uses low voltage to turn on the power supply.

Hi,

You need to connect both 20-pin and 4-pin connector to *********** board. Your 4-pin connector is located between your CPU and a I/O connectors.

If you did it right first time, check if you have anything shorted on your board because your old P/S could go bad for reason.
