Kirland Washer Agitator Problem (Whirlpool)

The agitator in the washer now moves only intermittently. When the washer is running you can even spin it with your hand and only occasionally feel a "push" against the agitator by the machine. What are the possible solutions and how can the agitator be remove for inspection?

You were completely correct. I purchased an Agitator repair kit and installed the parts and the problem was solved. Thanks!

You have what are called "dogs" inside the agitator which are plastic gears. They commonly go bad and are easy to change. Just pull the top cap off of the agitator. Then look down into the center cavity and you should see a round plastic cap. Pull up on this and remove it. (note: it has an o-ring which often tears and needs to be replaced.). Once this cap is off, there will be one center bolt that you remove and the top agitator will come off. You will see the 4 plastic dogs when you remove the assembly.

The ***** part of the agitator is supposed to ratchet in the clockwise direction. this is normal. If you can spin it in either direction (turned off) then you need a set of agitator dogs.
