Question about Garmin GPSMAP 178C GPS Receiver
The 178C will boot up, find satallites and even allow me to function between screens, however when not moving between screens it will shut off after about 30 seconds. I can push the on button and it will again boot up. Prior to this the unit functioned without problems for the past 2 - 3 years. Why is it shutting off on me?
Check the pins at the connector on the back of your unit. Make sure one of them is not bent or broken off. One of the pins on mine is missing about 1/16" of the tip. My boat repair shop says it's the power lead, but Garmin wants $200 for a generic repair.

I've had a similar situation with a Magellan, it would power off despite being plugged in.
Its usually a battery issue, perhaps its not getting enough power? You could try to unplug it and do a "hard battery reset" depending on the type of battery. Keep turning it on and let it run out, until it wont even turn on anymore, after that plug it into a charger while off and allow it to charge completely. Turn it on, see if it still shuts off.
