BIOS doesn't find SATA HDD

Hello,

I bought a second-hand HP Compaq d530 PC with a PATA HDD already installed.
I pluged a SATA HDD as well, but it doesn't find it. I think I've enabled all necessary BIOS settings, but I tried different options nevertheless. I also tried to unplug the PATA HDD, tried with both SATA slots, but it still doesn't work.

Any suggestiongs?

Hi fallacy,

If you have the system disks and you can boot from CD, I would just follow the prompts to reload the operating system. If the computer cannot see the CD or HardDrive you need to reset the BIOS setting to factory default settings and that should restore the drives to be used. Note: Hard Drive should be Primary Master and CD-Rom, (not DVD-Rom if you have one) should be Secondary Master. If you have a DVD Rom drive I recommend unplugging both power and data cords from it and making sure the CD-ROM is set to Secondary Master, NOT Secondary Slave.

This should allow you to boot to a CD and reload the operating system. Unfortunately your files are lost.

Compaq Mini 700EL hdd not recognised

If you are installing Windows XP then -
The problem is that XP installation CD does not have a SATA driver, unless you have a SATA drive on a disk etc. and can install the driver when XP asks for a hard drive driver then, XP cannot detect the hard disk and therefore won't install XP. The FIX. Go into the BIOS and disable the SATA drive (enable IDE emulation), this will make XP think it is a IDE/PATA hard disk. Then you can install XP normally. When Windows has been installed then install all the device drivers (including the SATA driver), then shut down and boot up and got into the BIOS and enable the SATA drive.

Hello, My my motherborad is ASUS p5rd1-vm;RAM1GB and hard disk is PATA 80 GB but the HDD is having some kind of problem and the windows have shown a warning about it several times. Now i want to buy a...

Yes, it's compatible with the motherboard, no, it's not compatible with the XP install disk because it doesn't have SATA support. And since Asus doesn't provides it special driver needed (one that must be put on a floppy) it means that you simply cannot install XP on this disk.
All you can do is to obtain another PATA hdd what ever its size and install XP in it. Then put the new SATA disk in and use it to store all the installed programs and all your files on it. As a bonus you won't lose them if the new PATA disk fails or XP gets corrupted.
Or install Vista or 7 instead of XP, the have support for SATA disks

XP cannot be installed natively on an SATA disk without the appropriate driver which must be loaded during the install - an extremely complicated maneuver. The best way to deal with that is to just add the new SATA hard disk: install XP on the PATA and use the new SATA for your files as a separate partition. The adapter cable can be bought for about $5 from the same shop as the hdd.
All the other modifications are just fine - just remember , the RAM will not be fully recognized and used because of the limitations of the 32bit XP.

I want to install a sata hdd to compaq d530 sff

You will need to purchase a sata cable if id does not come with the drive.

When you boot your computer press F2 to enter the BIOS, look in the Drives settings and be sure the SATA0 is enable.

Install the drive, connect Data and Power.

Boot to your CD media to install your OS.

That should do.

Please comment and rate if this was useful.

Does my d530 CMT have a SATA connector?

Answers to your questions:
1. Yes
2. Very likely
3. a Google search should show you what the connectors look like.
4 HP/Compaq do a good job of providing documentation. Go to hp.com and put in your system information. You should be able to locate motherboard diagrams there. If you can't let me know and I'll try to locate them.

What new HDD will match my Maxtor DiamondMax Plus 8?

Mark,
You can use any size HDD in your computer as a slave and it does not have to be an exact match for the maxtor. You will however need the make sure that the connections on the new drive match. For example SATA drives will not attache to an IDE cable and vice versa. The drive that you mentioned is an IDE style drive so unless your MOBO has SATA connectors on it you will need to buy an IDE/EIDE drive.
