Thank you so much for your help. You're suggestion to download Space Monger did the trick. I found the problem immediately. My 8 yr old daughter scheduled to record her favorite show in Media Center. She managed to record every show since August. Space Monger allowed me to see that right away. You are the best. Thank you again.

There are 2 reasons for this. Either your drive is really full or it could be a filesystem glitch.

I would recommend a free program called "Space Monger" to give you a visual representation on what is filling up your hard drive.

If it is a filesystem problem, you need to run chkdsk. I recommend this periodically even when you are not having problems. Go to Start, Run, type in "cmd" and hit OK, type in "chkdsk C: /r /f" and hit enter on the keyboard to run a full hard drive check. This will require you to reboot your computer. Sit back, that will take a little while.

Hope this helps!

Computer d drive full

Yes its always recommended to keep at least a minimum of 20% of total drive space as empty for lag free performance.
you will need to delete unwanted files on the drive to create some space else the computer would start running slow as the drive becomes full.
Please let me know if you have any other queries.

Recovery D drive

From what you described above "recovery D drive full", this is your recovery partition and you should not be using it as a file storage. Plug in your external drive again, I bet you find that its drive letter is not D.

My 225GB hard drive has suddenly gone from 25GB used to full. What's going on?

Sounds like your OS is mis-reporting the actual HD space. Run scandisk, or of you have a Bootable recovery disk, boot with that and run the command "chkdsk /r"

Dell Dimension E521 bad sectors

Hi there.
Hard to believe but this can be common depending on the manufacturer of the hard drive as some are not that good at all, some Maxtor's for example.
The best hard drives you can buy at the moment are Western Digital and Seagate, these drives come with 3 - 5 years guarantee so if they develop bad sectors they will replace the the drives free.
The best way to look after your drives is to perform a sector check once a month and keep your internet cache cleared, use a program called Ccleaner to clear the cache and temp files and also keep the registry clean.
I would also recommend you defragment your drive as soon as you have installed a clean operating system or defrag once a month too, that way you will get your full life from the hard drive.

Get Ccleaner here >>>>>>

Good luck and thanks for using FixYa!!

My c drive is full but my d drive is empty. how do i start to fill up my d drive?

If your cd drive is full you should move media files like movies and music to the D drive. Just drag the files from the folders on C drive to your D drive. You should make folders on the D drive so you can keep things organized. It's critical to get a nice chunk of free space back on the C drive. If the operating system is installed on the C drive it will run slow when the drive is too full. You may also want to start archiving files on burnable media such as cd or dvd or place files on an external hard drive.
