I spent over two hours on phone with tech support. He took control of my computer and uninstalled everything HP that had to do with the old HP printer, i.e., drivers, photo programs, etc. Then reinstalled software with J4580 printer. The software is fairly easy but will take you some time to figure out what to do. There is a device document online of about 184 pages where you can search how to do things. Mine works great now. Good luck.

SOURCE: Can't scan on the HP OfficejetJ4580

Uninstall everything that has to do with your old HP printer, drivers, photo processing, etc. Reinstall software with J4580 printer. That should open HP Digital Imaging Monitor where you can set scanning options. Plug printer into the back opf your computer. Plug power supply directly into the wall socket.

Can't scan- Refer to device documentation to

Try using widows paint. Look in windows accessories off the start program menu. If you open windows paint, look for open file from "Scanner or Camera". Most likely you can get the scanner to work again in Vista. Otherwise...try Vuescan scanner software. I think you can get a free trial period online and it should also work. You'll have to pay for that if you like it.

My printer is evidently installed correctly, since I am able to print OK, but I cannot scan, I get an error message when I press start scan and OK - "no scan option", and refer to "device documentation"

on your computer go to hp solution center..
under that go to settings..
then scan button settings..
over there add all options to the right side..
then try..

Assuming you're using Windows XP, you either need to install the full software suite (to access copy, scan, fax and print features), or if you don't have the CD, download the package here:

ftp://ftp.hp.com/pub/softlib/software9/COL19845/mp-52268-4/100_228_PS_AIO_02_Full_Net_enu.exe

Let me know if this helps, and please remember to rate my answer :)
