Question about Heating & Cooling

1 Answer

I have a 2 year old Goodman GDS80703ANA furnace that has always had a problem starting. Sometimes it starts on the first attempt but other times it takes 2 or 3 attempts. This is what I see happening: The Induced Draft Blower starts and runs- the Igniter will glow for a few seconds and just as the igniter starts to stop glowing I hear the Gas Valve click and open but it is too late. On the next attempt or so, the Gas Valve will open sooner and burner will ignite. My question is: Is the Integrated Control Module the only thing that controls the timing of the Igniter and Gas Valve or is there a sensor that monitors the Igniter to call for the gas valve to open.

Thanks for the response hilbuck29 ! If that is the case which I'm sure is, I wonder why the timing would fluctuate. I guess electronic circuits can do weird things.

My furnace blows cold air constantly even in heat mode. It's led light flashes 4 times in a set, what could it be?

On Goodman furnaces, 4 flashes usually means open high limit. Look for any burnt or loose wires or any resettable limits, they should have a red button that clicks when you push on it and wire going in and out of it with spade clips. If the open limit is not resettable, jump it out to verify its open and if that fixes the problem, replace the defective limit. Best of luck.

Armstrong furnace ultra 80sx doesnt always lite on first try, service repair man replaced smartvalve, sensor and igniter he says its ok if it doesnt always lite on the first try ,sometimes it takes three...

Sounds like your gas valve is sticking. Your repair man is somewhat correct by meaning that the furnace will attempt to start 3 times before going out on "Lock-out". The furnace is reaching it's expected life and you will start experiencing more frequent issues with it. Check into some of the incentives to get a replacement with a higher efficiency rating. The newer units have greatly improved in performance as well as comfort.

Based on your description I would guess that there is a "leak" somewhere between the gas valve and the actual fire. Use soap bubbles to check the connections at the gas valve. Also check the gaskets in the Gas valve the same way. Lastly there may be a cracked or misaligned burner causing the "leak". Best of Luck!

Main Fan won't turn off even with thermostat removed. Burner not

There is a chart with the wiring diagram and othere charts that will tell you what the 6 blinks are for. That should tell you what is wrong and what part you need. Sounds to me like the board has an issue or the gas valve is locked out.

My furnace shuts off sometimes after the first 20-30 seconds.

The two most common reasons I have found for this are listed below. You have already addressed the third one.

1) Grounding issue. This can be difficult to find but easy to diagnose. Try using a volt meter or even just a piece of wire. Touch one end to an unpainted surface of the interior furnace cabinet and the other end to the sheet metal plenum or other ground. If the symptoms go away then you have diagnosed the problem and need to find the faulty ground.

2) Pressure in the flu. Check to make sure that the flu vent pipe is not clogged or even partially filled with debris. The small rubber hose that connects to the switch from the inducer blower motor may be clogged. Also check the orifice on the inducer motor side. You can clear this with a paper clip. Water (condensation) in the inducer motor housing or pressure switch can cause a failure too. Rarely is the pressure switch itself bad. This usually will only happen if it has been physically damaged or soaked. Best of luck.

At what point does the pilot blow out? Within 5 seconds after it lights or when the room air blower turns on?

Yes, goodman offers a kit. However you will need a gas technician adjust the pressure for you. The whole conversion will take about an hour. The kit may cost $50 and labor is anyone's guess. Call your gas company and give then the model and serial nimber. They can order it and install it.
