Although I covered most of the ways to speed up Windows boot time in another article, I encountered a unique roadblock recently that made me write this article. 
During the last week I was asked by a customer to upgrade one of their office computers from Windows 98SE to Windows XP. Normally this is pretty standard, however because their current hard drive was only a 20GB with a gig or so remaining I wanted to upgrade their hard drive as well. 

I proceeded to ghost the drive to a larger hard drive and then installed an upgrade version of Windows XP on top of Windows 98 to preserve all of their settings and programs.

Everything went flawlessly, until I was finished...

  


After I completed the Windows XP upgrade, I shut down the computer completely and restarted it. The computer took FOREVER to boot into Windows XP. It was literally 2 minutes before I saw the Windows XP logo screen and another 30 seconds more before the desktop appeared. This was definitely a problem. 

After checking multiple settings in the BIOS, I compared the old and new hard drives. Everything seemed to be normal, except one. The old hard drive was setup to Cable Select and as my normal routine I had set the new hard drive as a Master drive. I changed the new hard drive to Cable Select, rebooted the computer, and the Windows logo screen came on seconds after the POST screen as before. Therefore, I have to add one more item to my list of ways to make Windows boot faster. Try changing the hard drive from Master to Cable Select, check the boot up speed and switch back to Master if you don't see a change.

Master/Slave Settings

Now for a refresher course on hard drive connections. When connecting more than one hard drive to a computer on the same IDE controller, you generally have to assign one as the primary (master) and one as the secondary (slave). You do this by changing the jumpers on the hard drive next to the power connector. Normally, the drive will have a diagram to let you know which jumper should be set for a master drive and which to set for a slave drive. You'll notice in the picture below the jumpers are circled on the end of the drive and the top of the drive shows the diagram to follow.



After changing the jumpers, connect the hard drive cable from the motherboard to the hard drives. Under normal circumstances, the end of the drive cable attaches to the Master hard drive, while the inside connector on the cable connects to the Slave drive. 

What About Cable Select?

Cable Select (CS) settings were designed to make it easier to connect hard drives because you didn't need to bother with setting the Master/Slave jumpers. You just connect the drives and depending on where you connected them to the cable the computer would know which is Master and which is Slave...in theory. Now comes the confusing part.

With cable select, you first needed a special 40 conductor IDE cable that would determine master/slave connections. This was different from the normal IDE cables at the time. Also, the Master connector on CS cables was the inside connector not the end connector. This made for a very confusing switch from everyday master/slave configurations.

80 conductor Ultra DMA cables WILL determine the Master/Slave settings through Cable Select however. So as technology advances, Cable Select as a concept may still catch on. With the newer Ultra DMA cables, you can set both drives to Cable Select (CS), connect them and they will work. Another change with the 80 conductor cables, the Master connector is on the end of the cable where it should be. In situations where you are using a newer Ultra DMA drive and cable, you can use Cable Select or standard Master/Slave jumper settings and the drive will boot properly.

In my scenario to start this article, the change from Master/Slave to Cable Select for this particular computer reduced the Windows boot time by more than 2 minutes.

Is this a new hard drive that you are fitting to a desktop PC?
If it is a new - empty- hard drive it will have to be formatted before you can install Windows.
If it is a hard drive that you are fitting as a slave you may be fitting it on the wrong part of the IDE data cable, or if SATA, on the wrong motherboard connector. IDE data cables have many pins and are grey and wide.
On an IDE cable you may have 3 connectors. One which fits the motherboard, and 2 connectors to fit drives. The connector FURTHEST away from the motherboard is the MASTER. The middle connector is for the slave.
On the rear of a hard drive you also have 'jumper connectors'. The location of these connectors sets the drive as either master or slave. On an IDE data cable the master drive must be at the cable end with the jumper connector set to master (or 'cable select'). The slave drive - on the middle connector - must have its jumper connector set to 'slave' (or 'cable select').
If you are using SATA, the hard drive should be set to master or slave.
However, it would appear your computer IS recognising the drive. To check, restart your computer and press the delete key as it boots up (or it may be another key ..it tells you on the start up screen which key to press to access the bios settings).
Access the bios settings and look for the disk information. It will tell you if the disk is detected and whether it is a primary master or primary slave. You can always try disconnecting your dvd drive (power off the computer first..) and fitting the hard drive in its place. Restart the computer and go into the bios settings again. Is the drive now recognised as the secondary master? It well may be just incorrect location on the cable/jumper settings/where the cable is connected to the motherboard.
If it is just a single hard drive you have and it is new, Your computer will tell you that it needs formatting before you can install an operating system or software.
If it's a second hand drive you are fitting, your computer will not boot up even if the hard drive already has Windows on it. You will have to reinstall Windows from a dvd.
If it's your existing hard drive which had been previously working ok, remove the data cable and reconnect it. It may be a 'dry joint' causing the problem. If disconnecting and reconnecting the cable on an existing hard drive does not work .. begin to suspect a failing hard drive

Set The Jumper Setting On Your Hard Disk Drive

The hard disk drive will be detected as 32 GB if the jumper is set to the 32 GB clip pin setting. The common jumper settings for Samsung hard disk drives are listed below. Please check the label on your hard disk drive for the correct jumper setting.

Important: Use the alternate jumper setting listed below under General Pin Setting. After changing the jumper, partition and format your hard disk drive.

Configuring your Hard Disk Drive (Master, Slave, or Cable Select) - Setting the Jumper

If this is the only HDD in your computer, set the pin setting to Master.
If this is the second HDD in your computer, set the pin setting to Slave.
If this is the second HDD in your computer, and the first drive is set to Cable Select, set the pin setting to Cable Select.
If you are replacing the HDD in your computer, set the jumper setting to match that of the drive you are replacing.

Cable Select:

This setting is the default setting for PATA/IDE hard disk drives. With the Cable Select jumper setting, the BIOS determines whether a hard disk drive is Set as Master or Set as Slave by it's position on the UDMA cable.
If the hard disk drive jumper is set to Cable Select and is connected to the black connector on the end of the UDMA cable, it is recognized as Set as Master for that PATA controller.
If the hard disk drive jumper is set to Cable Select and is connected to the grey connector on the middle of the UDMA cable, it is recognized as Set as Slave for that PATA controller.

Note: When using Cable Select, your system must meet the following conditions:
Your systems host controller must support Cable Select.
Your hard drives must support Cable Select.
Your cable must support Cable Select.

Set as Master:

Use this setting if you are installing an additional hard disk drive to a single UDMA cable with a hard disk drive Set as Slave, jumper one hard disk drive to Set as Master, and the other to Set as Slave.
Use this setting if you are installing an additional hard disk drive to a single UDMA cable and the Cable Select setting is not recognized.

Set as Slave:

Use this setting if you are installing an additional hard disk drive to a single UDMA cable with a hard disk drive Set as Master, jumper one hard disk drive to Set as Master, and the other to Set as Slave.
Use this setting if you are installing an additional hard disk drive to a single UDMA cable and the Cable Select setting is not recognized.

32 GB Clip Pin Setting:

Use this on computers manufactured before November 1998 when either you start up your computer and see the message, "Hard disk drive controller failure", or your system stops responding during the boot process after installing a new drive. This occurs when the hard disk drive is too large for the BIOS to support.

If after performing the troubleshooting procedure listed above, the full capacity of your hard disk drive is not recognized, click here for information about obtaining a system BIOS update. If you are unable to update your BIOS, another option would be to create a second partition with the remaining unallocated disk space.

Before doing anything, the user should completely shut down and unplug the computer to prevent electrocution or computer damage. Remove the computer's side panel so that the hard drive is displayed in order to find the jumpers on the IDE drive. Disconnect the power and IDE cables from the hard drive to access the drive better. The hard drive's jumpers are the small, black pegs on the back of the drive. These pegs fit over small metal conductors and assign the IDE drive's role. The user can remove the jumpers by prying them off of their current conductors with his/her fingernails or a small screwdriver. The jumpers can then be relocated to other conductors in order to assign a role to the IDE drive. Cable Select

Cable Select is a Maxtor jumper setting that is the default for virtually all IDE drives. Cable Select allows an IDE drive to naturally become either a Master or Slave depending on the cable used. Cable Select is a neutral setting and is also often used when a user only has one IDE device installed or when a device is neither a Master or a Slave, such as a Floppy Disk drive.

What are the jumper settings on the drive for the following? Cable select Slave Master


For Slave/Master set up most hard drives have a little diagram on them showing you where to put your jumpers for master and where to put the other one for slave. All hard drives are different. But on your diagram it should say "MA" for master, "SL" for slave and "CS" for cable select.

For Cable select you have to set jumpers to cable selected which should be on the diagram on your hard drive. You will need an 80 conductor IDE/ATA cable. The master conductor is at the end of the cable and the slave conductor is in the middle.

How to slave hard drive?


To configure the hard drive as a slave drive, you need to set a jumper on the hard drive to SL (slave)
The other jumper settings are MA (master) and CS (cable select).

How the jumper setting is done for maxtor n256j50


If this is an IDE/PATA hard drive then the jumper settings are marked on the circuit board.
MA = master
SL = slave
CS = cable select
If this hard drive is the one installed on the Primary IDE controller the the jumper has to be set to Master. If it won't boot up then the jumper needs to be set to Cable select.

If this hard drive is a second hard drive and is connected to the 2nd connector on the IDE data cable that is connected to the primary IDE controller then the jumper must be set to Slave.

If this hard drive is a second hard drive and is connected to the secondary IDE controller and there is no other drive on the IDE data cable other than this hard disk the the jumper can be set to either Master or Slave.
If there is a CD drive on this cable too then the drives on this data cable then the jumpers on each drive must be set differently, they cannot be set the same jumper setting.

I need the jumper settings for Maxtor N256 hard drive.


Hard drives have three jumper settings on them.
1.MASTER---MA
2.SLAVE---SL
3 CABLE SELECT----CS

If you have a hard drive on the end (last) on the ribbon cable connectors, then it is the master drive, and should be jumpered as such-- the jumper should be on the MA pins, any drive in the middle of the cable is jumpered as slave and should be on the SL pins.
CS usually causes problems, and I do not use it.
There are no jumpers on the motherboard that need to be changed for the hard drive. The only other settings for the hard drive are in the BIOS.

Bios Fail to detect Local Disk C and DVD-RW


I'm going to make an assumption here and guess that you have both hard drive and cdrom plugged into the same IDE cable. I think you have either 2 masters or 2 slaves and that is why the bios can't see them. On any one cable you can have a master and a slave. Drives have to be jumpered to configure them as a master, slave, or cable select. Cable select requires a certain kind of cable but in that system the master is the drive plugged into the first plug-in away from the motherboard or the middle plug and the slave is the second one or end plug on cable. If you can jumper cable select and then plug the hard drive into the middle plug on the IDE ribbon and the CD rom to the end one then you'll have a master and a slave. Bios should then read the drives. If that doesn't work then you have to jumper the hard drive to master and cdrom to slave. The cdrom is marked on the back as to which jumpers you use. MS/SL/CS. master/slave/cable select. The hard drive usually has jumper settings on the front of the drive but you might have to look up on manufacturer's web site. Most computers use cable select now.
