Re: connecting camera to pc

My best guess would be a dead short in the usb connector internal in the camera. i would ask myself if it would be cost effective to repair or replace the camera.

When I switch on to download photos the camera lense slightly comes out and there is also no beep noise that normally follows, it is not letting me download?

Even if the USB cable is connected perfectly to the camera and PC it still is not sure everything in the cable and both connectors is 100%. Or even the drivers in the computer can be corrupted.
Start with another cable, and if possible try to connect another camera to the compeer, to check the computer acts normal to that.
Always try to isolate a problem to one thing.
For the time being, you perhaps could place the memory card in an external card reader connected to the computer, to put the pictures on your computer that way?

USB connection with the camera causes computer to crash.

Try using a different USB cable. The connections between cameras and computers usually are problematic. A card reader will allow you to download the pictures from the SD card, without problems and saving your camera's battery power supply

Nikon coolpix s210 will not connect to mac

I have a Intel Mac Powerbook running OS10.5.8
On a coolpix 100, the default setting is that the camera is charged by the computer through the USB cable. You need switch that OFF.
While the camera still does not show as usb device, you can access it through the Nikon transfer program AND through iPhoto
