Question about Compaq Presario R3000 Notebook

R4000 will not boot, I think HD is bad. Is there any online manual to show how to take apart to get HD out? Also are there updates to BIOS so that I can boot from USB [now only floppy, cd, HD or network]. Is there any way to run laptop without a HD, by using an external HD [these are cheaper and I have afew extra ones]. Thank you Steven

usb option is not in bios version F.14 that is on laptop now. I am not sure if bios upgrade will add it in bios? That was what I was asking. Also, according to bios update, it is done under windows so I guess I'll need to buy a new HD first or is there another way? thank you Steven

will not boot from CD. Compaq told me in online chat if HD goes it will not boot to anything, wouldn't tell me if bios update will correct or not, they didn't seam to know much. I called today to get a price on HD and they told me they wouldn't tell me a price unless I had serial number [as if there are millions of HDs for a laptop].

Yes u can run a usb from the boot menu

u will have to configure the bios.........

u may have to make some changes to ur external hard disk
u will have to use some ones comp to do these aas urs is not working...................

i got this from the net and this should work

Make your flash drive bootable using Bart's mkbt util:
http://www.nu2.nu/mkbt/ | Alt: mkbt20.zip Put a bootable floppy disk in your A: drive or create one using Windows.
Download mkbt20.zip and unpack to to new temp folder you create.
Go to the temp folder.
Extract the bootsector from the bootable floppy disk. eg Open a DOS Window and go to the directory where you extracted MKBT. Type:
mkbt -c a: bootsect.bin
The boot sectors from the bootable floppy disk have just been saved to a file in the temp folder you created.
Format the flash drive in FAT or FAT16.
Copy the bootsector to the flash drive. Open a DOS Window and go to the folder where you extracted MKBT. Type:
mkbt -x bootsect.bin Z:
"Z" represents the flash drive drive Letter. So if your flash drive has another drive letter, then change the "Z" accordingly.
Now you can [grin] "should" be able to copy the utils you need to the pen drive.

ok then ur problem seems to be that ur bios does not support usb boot...

what u could do is first get ur updates on a floppy which u will get

and then if u could manage to get hold of a bootable Linux installation (On a CD) u could boot the linux and then update ur BIOS from linux

    tell me if that works.......

    bye

Dell laptop no boot device available I turn it off then restart and everything boots up

Go to support.dell.com, enter your service tag and look for driver updates. The main ones you're interested in are BIOS updates and Chipset updates. Depending on the age, your CMOS battery could be going out and need to be replaced. They're only about $3 but you have to take the unit apart to replace it. Dell should have a manual that shows you how on the support site. Try the updates first.

Need BIOS update help

Hi, i think you don't need and update, are you using win7, XP?, just use the windows installer disk when you've fitted it, put the new HD drive in, then boot from DVD/CD. back up pic/photos 1st mind... let me know..

If this doesn't work put your old HD back in and it will boot up as normal...

Acer aspire one note book problems start up won't let me reboot quick blue screen message tried everthing in :f8: options and won't let me in to safe mode

I have the same problem with my acer laptop 3680. It is stuck on the BIOS screen with "press f2" at the bottom. I can get into the menu by pressing f2 repeatedly as soon as I hit the power button, and was able to change the boot order to CD first, but it will not boot from the Windows CD even though the CD drive is flashing and I can hear the CD spinning - same as the hard drive - still get the BIOS screen. I took it completely apart, dusted with compressed air, replaced RAM (new), and still same f2 screen. I removed the hard drive and booted up and the BIOS screen did not appear, but it said "Drive not found". Therefore, I think I have a dead BIOS battery since the BIOS isn't present without the HD. I did not notice a battery when I had it apart and have read that it is soldered in and almost impossible to replace. I ordered another motherboard on eBay (search: motherboard 3680) for $89 BIN today and will post again with results hopefully next week.
Have you tried pressing ALT+F10 on boot? If lucky, that will get the recovery console and you'll lose all data. I was able to save everything from my HD by plugging it into my PC with a USB/IDE adaptor which can be bought for cheap online and in most computer stores.

I have a problem with an Acer Aspire 6930, sometimes during startup ut shows a message that it cant find windows and shuts down. After trying again it powers on normally. But i wasnt able to find the...

If it is an older Laptop... it could just be the HD not spinning up correctly or not spinning up as fast as the PC is booting. There is a HD check to the BIOS in the first seconds of the Boot. BIOS doesnt see it... you get the fail.
A good test is after it fails... do a CTRL/ALT/DEL to restart the system... if it Boots then it was the HD not keeping up.

OPTION: Also check to see if the BIOS needs updated and this is a tricky opperation to do... make a mistake you loose your system. This could also help if the condition is common and a patch was created.

It doesnt hurt the to run it the way it is. The Drive lagging like that doesnt always mean the HD is bad. If it occours every single time I would worry. Buy a New HD to be safe and also the newer HD's will help 100% on the Speed of the system.

I have a compaq presario r4000 will not boot up correctly

When you start it up, go to the BIOS option and select "peripheral" settings. I don't know which column its under but you want to turn the network adapter off. If that makes your Operating System come up working (And you may have to come up in SAFE mode the first time), then you can always go back and reset the BIOS to recognize the network adapter, or install a different one.

Dell Inspiron 6000: No Boot Up after BIOS loads

You can download a small program called memtest 86 which is an ISO for creating a bootable cd that will test the ram. You can get it from: http://www.memtest86.com/download.html

Also the HD may be the problem even if the BIOS can see it. Pull the HD and try booting from the xp disk again.

Hope this helps

Format HD fails on armada 1592DMT

The safe bet is to go into the bios and choose "load Bios defaults" then restart. If your HD fails on the format command, it is probably bad.

Presario R4000 does not detect 2GB of memory

Hi PhotoTom,
I check you laptop specification and it really do support uptp 2 GB. So here I'm not sure your 1GB are both of them DDR 333Mhz ?? .If so what I really want you to test here is
1. 1 GB in one slot and turn it on (as you say you can boot wih it) after that move that 1 GB to the other slot and see.
2. try the same with the other 1GB and see that both work fine on both slot or not.
Incase both work fine on both slot then maybe problem with hardware what I want you to do after that is try to check your BIOS version and check on the website that they do have new BIOS version or not ?? Coz this can help incase problem are from BIOS.

Goodluck,takecare.
