Washer does everything except spin

This is most likely a failure of the plastic couplers / rubber isolator between the motor and gearcase. This assembly is designed to fail during an overload condition, but they often just wear out over time. If you are mechanically inclined, it's not a difficult repair to make.

1. Remove console
2. Remove 2 gold clips at rear of top
3. Unplug lid switch harness
4. Rotate the cabinet up a few inches at the rear and pull it straight off
5. Near the floor at the front of the machine, you'll see the pump, motor, gearcase assembly
6. Remove the 2 large metal clips that hold the motor to the gearcase (you might have to disconnect the motor wiring connectors
7. Rotate the motor / pump downward so the end of the motor facing the gearcase is pointing up / out so you can see it.
8. You should see evidence of a failed coupler... rubber and / or plastic pieces
9. Pry the broken plastic couplers off of the motor and gearcase along w/ whatever's left of the isolator (black rubber)
10. Install new parts (probably need to get these at your local appliance repair shop)
11. The tricky part is realigning the couplers and isolator so you can push everything back together. Be patient... once it's pushed back together, reinstall the large metal clips, motor wiring connectors, etc.
12. Put the cabinet back on, being careful that the rear corners are pushed inward so they engage on the base tabs
13. Install everything else in reverse order of removal
14. Plug it in and listen to her purr...

Good luck.

Kenmore 80 Model #11020802990 Won't Spin!!

i think you have a basket drive tube problem, what happened to mine was the thrust washer had ground off the bottom of my tube, the clip that holds the brake release arm fell off,the arm fell down breaking the 2 little pins on it, without that arm on the tube it won't release the brake allowing the basket to spin, you would have to remove the tranny to see if there is a problem there,,,,,also the top of the tube there is 2 notches that line up in your drive block, could be broken there,,,,you would have to remove the agitator to check there!

The following link gives step-by-step instructions on how to repalce the gearcase on a Kenmore top loading washing machine with a direct-drive transmission:

To answer your question, "yes", you DO need to remove the agitator. That is explained in step 11 of the instructions. I hope you find this information helpful. If you require additional assistance, please let me know.

PS Any particular reason why you are wanting to remove the gearcase?

Re: gearcase

Its hard to tell without seeing it. If the clutch is covered in oil (from the gearcase), it may be a good idea to replace it. Otherwise, you can reuse the old one. Let me know if you get to a point where you're stuck and need assistance.

PS The gearcase has specific instructions on the container that it be shipped in the UPRIGHT position. This prevents the gearcase oil from leaking out. In addition, there is a small breather hole on the top of the gearcase, that is sealed with paint prior to shipping. Don't forget to use a scribe or an awl to open this breather hole BEFORE installation.

Kenmore washer won't spin

That's a tough one, Billybob. It can either be a Gearcase problem, or a Basket Drive. Since the washer seems to be performing all other functions, I'm leaning towards your assessment of a Basket Drive. You can get the entire drive and brake assembly as one unit at Just type in your COMPLETE model number and look under the "Brake/Clutch/Gearcase/Motor and Pump" heading for item number 1 (part #285792). I would be prepared, however, that if that doesn't correct the problem, you may have a gearing problem with the gearcase (especially if your gearcase is leaking oil really bad). Usually when they go bad, the washer will usually exhibit symptoms of slow spins, assisted spins where you have to spin the tub by hand to get it started, or loud grinding noises. If you require instructions on how to replace the drive, let me know.

PS I would recommend you also purchase a new motor coupling if your doesn't have the steel grommet in the center (you'll thank me later if you do). That's item 13 under the same heading. Also, you will need a center post gasket (tub gasket) which listed as item number 16 (part #383727) under the "Agitator/Basket/Tub" heading, and a tub ring gasket which is item number 9 (part #3976308) under the same agitator heading. Replacing these seals will prevent potential leaks when you are done.

Gearcase oil leak by laying on its side - Problem?

There is a breather hole in the top of the gearcase. Yoy probably had some leak out through there when you laid the washer over. If it was not over to long you will probably be ok. there is no way to replenish the oil it would require replacing the gearcase.
