Question about Sony VAIO PCV-RX462DS PC Desktop
Hi, I have an older sony vaio, about 4 1/2 years old. All of a sudden the cd rom drive won't work at all. Everything else works ok though.
Throwing money at "lens cleaning" would be unlikely to correct such a problem since misreads do not disable the drive either for read or for write/burn. Such cleaning typically serves little or no utility or benefit since no head contact with disc occurs with optical storage devices such as cd/dvd/bd etc. Sometimes, I have closed the door not realizing the disc was not pressed down correctly and fully onto the spindle. That error will give the impression of an absent (dead) drive because the data seek will not work with a non-spinning disc. If you were to "clean" the drive lens or whatever, you might conclude that the cleaner worked because, by mere happenstance, you properly seated a disc that had been off-spindle before. Not been there; not done that; but have "floated" a cd.

I'd reckon at 4.5 years you've had an extremely good run from your CDROM. You could always try a lens cleaner which you can get from any good music shop but judging by your unit's age you deserve a newer and faster Unit. Maybe a CD burner or even a DVD burner. They are much cheaper these days. My first single speed CDROM cost me $999.00 I can now buy a 52 speed CD Burner for $49.00 BMW

Hi there I do understand the problem First i'd like you to check whether the burner is getting recognized or not-Insert bootable CD and tried booting the computer through bootable disk. If that works then we can confirm that the burner is working If the first step goes thro' then boot the computer in safe mode(Coz, safe mode is the one in which computer can boot with the minimal set of driver) chk in device manager whether do u got any conflict in devices If not then try starting the IMAPI CD services and try it,if not then del Upper Filters and lower filters in registry at ur own risk

I suggest you to go through the CMOS and figure it out if the autodetect setting is enabled.....and try to check the data and power cable if ti 's properly installed...if it doesn't work you'd better update the BIOS through flashing the BIOS utility,,,,

Clean the laser lens with q-tip. Also, when mine does not burn a disc I lower the burn speed and it works.

I had the same problem. I removed the cd-rom and upgraded to a DVD/CD player and burner. I think it cost me about 80.00 which would be cheaper than buying a new computer.
This little computer is so versatile and I upgraded my OS and memory and it's still performing great.

Sometimes a unit may lose software needed to run and your system may need to be rerun. But more than likely your cd rom is bad and needs to be replaced. A cd burner would be a cheap good replacement for it. It would give you more speed and longer life and the ability to burn records and programs for safe keeping. Easy to change out on most computers.

Faulty cd drive replace. also i would recomend cleaning all system fans. check system cables for corrcet fit. most of my corrections would be best performed by a local repair shop. Sony's are at best problematic.

SOURCE: Sony Vaio sound...
The sony VAIO Pcv-j200 only runs with Windows 2000, windows Me and windows xp. The current operating system Vista on your computer right now will work but some of the features of it may not. The link below shows all the drivers for your unit for diffent operating systems (not vista). What you can try to do is to download the audio driver for windows xp
