You possibly have a remote control that has a key stuck in ,locate all your remotes and check for that first , also i have seen first hand doors opening by themselves ,the older ones had 3 frequencys that they went by 308-310-312 now theese are the 40 year old machines and if you live close to a police station /fire station/or airport ,these facilties broadcast in the same frequency and all they have to do is key the microphone or radio and they send a signal , well that got to be crazy so the garage opener co,s decided to have their remotes on a different frequency and this worked fine ,now we have multi code systems that are in the billions ,now we have rolling code technology ,another way to fix your problem if you don,t have a sticky remote key is replace the logic board ,and that will defietly solve your issue , logic boards to go bad and do things that are not normal operation to the machine , i would like to know more about your machine because you did,nt state what brand or how old it is and i would be able to give you better advice if i knew more about the issue , does it open at different times of the day , does it do it everyday ,or just sometimes ,do you keep a remote in your pocket ? the reason i am asking is because i had a customer call me about his door being open in the morning when he came out of the house , I found that to be that when he sat down to watch television at night he had a keychain remote in pocket and everytime he sat down one of the keys would press up against the remote and open his door ,so when he came out in the morning he would see it open when he knew he had closed it the night before , that one took a little detective work but i solved the problem , Hope i was able to help you and feel free to contact me again if you don,t find the problem , i you feel i was helpful please leave a nice rating , thank you glenn

What does the purple button light flashing on 1/2 horsepower craftsman garage door opener

I think the adjustment mode is on.

For example, that's from Craftsman manual:

Setting the Force
The force setting button is located on the left panel of the motor unit. The force setting measures the amount of force required to open and close the door.
1. Locate the purple button on the left panel of the motor unit (Figure 1).
2. Push the purple button twice to enter the opener into Force Adjustment Mode (Figure 2). The LED (Indicator Light) will flash quickly.
3. Push the remote control or control console (Figure 3). The door will travel to the DOWN (close) position.

Actually, you should just read carefully your garage door opener unit's manual.

My Craftsman garage door will not close, only a few inches at a time

have a problem which returns every year when outdoor temperatures drop close to freezing. garage door will open only a few inches, then stops. I can close it and try opening it again... same result. After five or six such attempts it typically will open. Interestingly, when I push the switch button mounted on the interior wall of my garage and keep it pushed, the door will open, until I release the button at which point it stops opening.

My garage door won't close unless I hold the main button down in the garage. As soon as it closes it opens up again unless I press the button quickly. I can open it up using the remote, but cannot close it...

your garage door has saftey sensors at the door
these are photo eyes
in the owners manuel that came with the opener
that has pictures in it which would help
the photo eyes need to be clear of debri and aimed at each other with no obstruction
there are leds on each sensor and when aimes properly they should be light if i remember correctly
if you can not get them to light then you may have to replace the sensors

Door opens up for 2 ft then slowly closes down

Sounds like one of your door springs has broken or the drive gear is going bad. The gear is white nylon and is just in front of the motor.

I have a jackshaft garage opener, and the open/ close button on the wall do not work. I can manually press the relays to open and close the door. I want it to work right.

Try removing the wall button and the two wires on the rear. Touch them together quickly and see if the opener works. If it does you have a bad wall control. If not you have either bad wiring or a bad logic board.

Doors open but will not close

The safety beams (mounted on the track near the floor) are out of alignment and the LED light should be blinking. The garage door opener will not let the door close if the beams are misaligned. Realign them and the LEDs on the beam or on the operator will stay on. you can close the door now

Garage door close but motor keeps running

The close setting limit switch needs adjusted. Once it is adjusted it should work just fine.
