My 1501 Dell Inspiron turns on but I have a blank black screen. The only light that shows is the power light on the upper right side of the laptop.

Power getting to the laptop. Try first to see if this will give a screen image on an external monitor, listen for the sound of the cpu fan, hard drive and DVD rom drives clicking, see if the DVD rom drive will open if pressed.

Then remove battery and AC adaptor, press the power button for 30 secs, refit mains only and try this on mains supply (no battery)

If this fails to boot, check the light on the ac adaptor is a steady green, flashing green indicates power is not fully reaching the laptop (motherboard problems)

If it is steady and the LED power light on the laptop is steady, suspect the DC jack socket. If this feels loose or sloppy, it will need replacing, depending on the type fitted, it may be soldered onto the board, or a wired connector, which sometimes goes bad.

After that, I'd suggest that a capacitor has gone on the actual motherboard and you will need to strip the laptop to check it.

Tip

Instructions to keep your Laptop Battery last longer

There are certain elementary rules for getting more from your laptop battery. Make it a point to turn off Wi-Fi and BlueTooth. You are aware that most laptops have shortcut keys to instantly disable wireless networking. Completely avoid playing computer games, music or DVD movies as multimedia activities tend to drain laptop batteries. Disconnect all external devices like PC Card modems, firewire, USB devices and optical drives. It is advisable to use the notebook touchpad instead of an external mouse. It will also help to adjust your screen brightness as dimming your display saves battery power. You'll certainly need to see your screen, but just how bright do you need it to be? Screens lighted at full strength eat up 15 percent more battery life than if your battery was at 50 percent brightness. So, be sure to squeeze more life out of your laptop by reducing the brightness of your monitor a great deal.
3711.jpg Select a laptop power scheme that turns off the notebook monitor and hard disk after 10 minutes of inactivity. Remember to decrease or mute the laptop speaker volume. Lastly, programs that are run from a CD or DVD can be copied and run from the hard drive, which typically consumes less power than an optical drive. Some games offer you the choice to install to the hard drive, so choose this option, as you will get more life out of your laptop than using the CD-ROM or DVD player, which are massive battery consumers. There are also some more tips to improve your laptop battery life. If you do not use your laptop for extended periods of time like a few days or a week, then remove the battery pack from the laptop. Never expose the battery to high heat or extreme cold conditions. For instance, do not leave your battery in your car during the summer months. Hot batteries discharge very quickly, and cold ones can't create as much power. Make it a point to plug your laptop charger adapter into a UPS and not directly into a power outlet or surge protector. Fully charge new battery packs before use. New pack needs to be fully charged and discharged (cycled) a few times before it can qualify to full capacity. Leaving a battery in a laptop while using an electrical outlet for long periods of time will keep the battery in a constant state of charging up and that will reduce the life cycle of the battery.
Energy management has been a problem since the earliest days of mobile computing. Drains on a battery include virtually every component on your laptop, including the screen, the hard drive, the CD-ROM and DVD-ROM, and other peripherals. The biggest villain is DVD movie, which cause the screen to run at full power for the life of the movie. Make sure you have no devices plugged into the laptop that can drain its power, such as a webcam, USB thumb-stick, or wireless PC card. According to laptop manufacturers, connected peripherals can impact battery life by up to 12 percent (depending on the peripheral), so get used to the touchpad instead of using an external mouse when you're away from an electrical outlet. As a ‘Prevention is better than cure’ philosophy, it is worth mentioning that air travelers should make it a point to recharge the battery before a flight. Find an electrical outlet while you're waiting for your flight at the gate, a restaurant, or departure lounge.

I have a dell latitude L400 which has external DVD Rom. I have bought new hard drive and traing to install new window but the sistem sais that The operating sistem is not found. F2 and F12 kis are not...

With a new hard drive you have to first format and install an operating system before it will work. Insert the hard Drive and connect up the DVD, set system BIOS to Boot from removable media IE: The DVD, and insert a Windows setup CD/DVD in the DVD drive, boot of that DVD, and proceed with the install following the instructions. That will install a Windows operating system.

I have a Gateway w340ua the other day i shut it down properly and todat it will not boot up at all nothing on screen but the dvd rom light comes on ?

Attach a external monitor and reboot -- if it comes up then the LCD on the laptop may be broken / damaged. This is where I would start.

let me know what happens after that.

if still no picture it could mean a bad video card and might need replaced.

Looks like a bad video card/chip or motherboard.

Experts only!!!
Try this:
  1. Power OFF the computer
  2. Remove the battery
  3. Unplug AC
  4. Remove the RAM
  5. Remove the CMOS battery
  6. Press and hold Power ON button for 30 secs. at least
  7. Put back the RAM and the CMOS battery
  8. Put back the battery
  9. Plug back AC
  10. Power ON as normal

If that does not help, remove the hard drive and just boot into BIOS setup.

Cant get DVD's to play

Try cleaning off the laser of the dvd drive with a damp q-tip. This will make sure there is no specs of dust or dirt on the laser.

If it sill plays cd's but not dvd's then that means the laser is bad cause it takes more power from the laser to read dvds cause there is more information that needs to be verfied.

So if the laser is bad that means the drive you bought was defective. Try a bunch of different dvds to be sure you don't have any that are bad.

If your getting it with any dvd your putting in there then you know you need to get another drive.

ACER ASPIRE 5100 DVD/CD ROM IS NOT DETECTED IN BIOS?

My Aspire 5100 not only looses the cdrom but also the hard drive! It sometimes beeps 3 times.. I'd go into set-up (BIOS) and niether the hard drive or dvd would be listed.. As a last resort, I flashed the motherboard bios with the latest version from Acer and so far the problem hasn't returned. I also set the laptop to hibernate after 30 minutes of non use when both on battery or on ac power. Reason? My problem always started when I left my laptop unattended for some time. When I'd return, the computer would be off.. not asleep or hibernating, but off - even though it was set to never turn off in the power settings in windows. When I'd turn it back on, that is when the hard drive and dvd rom would vanish in the BIOS. So as an added precaution, I set the laptop to always hibernate after 30 minutes.. Like I say, so far so good..
