I have a 52" Philips tv and the remote will only work intermittently. I have changed the batteries, bought a new remote & new batteries, cleaned the sensor...I think the problem is with the TV sensor???...Any ideas appreciated. Thanks!

you probably need to go for a universal remote , and check as the problem might be on the existing remote may not be working and then using the universal remote , u can undo the changes you have done .
the batteries of remote control may exhausted , replace it the remote control working you may check through your mobile camera by following step
1. point the camera in front of your remote control's eye that is the LED 2. now press the remote control's any button and see in the mobile camera that LED is glowing or not 3. you may check other working remote of any other product which you have by this way i.e. through mobile camera
Mine is a 190s Monitor and not a TV with any kind of remote unit controlling it. I had this issue about a year ago and it sorted it's self after a week or so left turned off. This makes me wonder if it has to do with heat and humidity affecting the micro switches located behind the push button controls on the removable screen surround.
suziglantz, A good TECHNICIAN should be able to pinpoint where the problem is. I suspect that as long as the unit has perfect pic and sound when it IS ON, there should be no problem for a tech to find a thermally intermittant solder joint inside the unit on some printed circuit board. Most likely place to look first would be the Power Supply board. They are called "switch-mode-power-supplys" SMPS for short. Here is what I think. Parts are soldered to the printed circuit boards at the factory. But over time the unit is subjected to large changes in temperature. You do this every time you turn "on/OFF the unit. Let's see here, 360 days x 1 ON and one OFF x 6yrs will be approx 2000 cold to hot cycles. I would think that this would not happen for at least 4000 cycles. Again, a tech type person will need to find the poorly soldered component and or the SOLID STATE component which has a thermal intermittant problem. That's about all I can recomend at this time. Do some research on the web and you will find all types of info on temperature related failures of electronic devices. Please rate this response on fixya if you feel it has been of any help to you. If you still have your instructions for the universal remote. Check in there and it should have a section for your tv or model not listed and how to do a search with your remote to find the tv. Then it will store it and you will be able to use the remote.
Resetting the TV If the buttons on the remote AND the buttons on the TV case do not work (channels do not change and you cannot open or navigate the menu), the TV has stopped responding. Reset the TV as follows:
NOTE: Some TVs have a reset button. If available and accessible, try using the reset buttons before using the steps below. Using the reset buttons can save time.
1.Unplug the TV power cord from the power outlet. 2.Unplug any connected devices (DVD, Set-top boxes, etc...) 3.Press and hold the TV power button for five seconds. 4.Plug the TV power cord back into the power outlet and turn on the TV. 5.Open the on-screen menu to confirm that the TV is responding again. 6.Turn off the TV and reconnect the devices. 7.Turn on the TV.
