ADF feed problem after going into the maintenance menu

Hi,
I have a MFC 8860 that was having issues not being able to fax correctly.  It was giving a sending error after loading the document into memory.  Manual sending worked where I would use the off hook key and type in the number and hit send.
So I called technical support and the woman on line walked me through the maintenance menu.  I did a restart while holding down the menu key and the display flashes maintenance.  She then had me type in a number of codes 10 23 then move the curser all the way to the right and type 1 then 1300101000 then ok there might have been a couple of other steps in there.  There was not much feedback on this part.
THen I typed 99 and it dropped me out of the maintenance menu.
I tried the fax and the first thing that I realized was that the ADF would not advance my page into the unit and I got a document jam.
If I load the document on the glass slide I can send the fax by preloading the document.  So that problem was solved but I can no longer use the ADF for faxing, copying and scanning.
The tech support woman told me that my only option was to take it in for servicing.
It seems like too much of a coincidence that the ADF stopped working.  It seems like page is not advancing into the machine.  Is there a way I can make sure that it is activated through the maintenance menu?
Thanks for any help.

THanks for answering but there is nothing blocking the feeder.

THe first roller bar is not turning.  This started happening right after tech support had me reprogram the machine. This machine never even jammed before this.

If I open the cover and manually roll the first bar so the paper feeds into the second roller the paper launched into the ADF with no problems.....
Does anyone have all the code sets for the maintenance menu?  I realize this is dangerous but there must be a set of codes that controls parts of the ADF.

    THanks David

Are you sure there's not something blocking the ADF.

Open it up and look inside, especially for a switch actuator being held down.

When a Brother MFC-8820D won't feed documents

I found this problem on a Brother MFC 8820D, but it may also apply to it's sister models: MFC 8420, DCP 8020, DCP 8025D, and DCP 8025DN.
Symptom: When you insert a document into the feeder to scan, fax, or copy, it recognizes it, but when you touch the Start key, it barely twitches, then says Check Original, as if it had jammed. You can pull the document out, touch Stop, and try again as often as you want, but it won't feed.
In my machine it turned out to be just a glitch in the memory. It cleared up with a Memory Clear operation:
You need to enter the Maintenance Mode. Here's the easy way on the MFC 8820D; other models may have different keyboards:
  • Turn power off.
  • Press and hold the Menu button.
  • Keep holding Menu down while turning the power on.
  • The machine appears to start normally. Keep holding the Menu button down until the words Please Wait disappear. Then release.
The word MAINTENANCE should appear on the display, while all lights flash in unison.

Maintenance Mode allows you to commit all kinds of crimes against your machine, all by entering just two little digits. Don't mess around - just clear your memory and get out. If you start to enter the wrong number, touch Stop, then enter the correct number.
The code for clearing your machine's memory is 91. That's it. You don't touch Start or Set or anything else - just the two digits. The 91 code initializes the EEPROM, but leaves your phone directory and your own name and number intact.
It will take a few seconds to clear everything, then return to MAINTENANCE. You have two ways to get out of Maintenance Mode: you can touch 99, or you can turn the machine off, then on again. Either way, it will go through it's entire warm-up routine. When it's done it should be fine again.

A similar problem can occur if a gear falls off one of the document feed roller shafts under the rear top cover. That's a different problem altogether.

My mfc 6490cw sends blank faxes

Normally this is caused by not loading the item being faxed in the ADF (Auto Document Feeder) correctly. Try sending a Fax of only one page by putting the page Face down on the Scanner plate (Lift the top of the printer to access the scanner plate). if this works then check the ADF scanner plate is not obscured.

Unable to print 32 printer brother mfc 9490cw

Unable to.....

Resetting purge counter:

1) Enter machine maintenance mode (on MFC210C all four photo/copy/fax/scan lights flash in maintenance mode). Care is needed in maintenance mode, otherwise critical settings may be inadvertently corrupted.

FAX models with numerical keypads: Press the Menu/Set, *, 2, 8, 6 and 4 keys within two seconds. (if you fail to complete the correct key sequence within two seconds, press the Stop key to try again).

Other (non-FAX) models: Press the Menu/Set and Black Start keys. Next press the "up arrow" key four times to enter the maintenance mode).

2) Press the 8 then 0 keys in the initial stage of the maintenance mode to call up the machine

My Brother MFC 7420 frequently jams. How can I prevent this problem? Renee

Try to perform maintenance.

Go to 'Start' menu
Select 'Printers & Faxes'
Right click on your printer (MFC)

Select properties.

Here you may see a list of tabs that will perform maintenance. One in particular that I am hoping is listed is the option to clean the rollers (what keeps the paper feeding smoothly).

Good luck and sorry for the speculations. I do not own or have personal experience with this printer, however, most printers (especially newer models) have these features that can help clear up these types of issues.

Brother MFC-8860DN All-In-One Laser Printer showing document jam error

Doc jam error usually means a jam in the adf (auto doc feed) when feeding a fax or doc to copy.

The most common reason brother mfc,s of this configuration have doc feed issues is believe it or not the hinge that operates the lid/adf, specifically the left side one (looking from the front). Inside the hinge there are two springs exerting tremendous force on the hinge (that enables the lid to stay up by itself) however this force eventually slowly breaks the fulcrum point of the hinge which leads to the lid not closing properly which means a sensor under the lid does not activate properly resulting in the adf stopping and resulting in the machine registering a jam. the difference between the sensor activating or not can be as little as a millimeter and is not often disernable. the hinge needs replacing by a techo.

the other reason could be you just have dirty adf feed rollers, clean them with a cotton rag dipped in metho, open the adf lid and give the rollers a scrub. the rollers should have 'tread' on them similar to a tyre, if not they are worn and need replacing.

One other possibility is there may be a paper fragment left over from a jam removal still caught in the paper path and activating a sensor activator that tells the machine paper is coming or going. most commonly in the section where the paper is looping on its return journey back out of the adf, open the adf lid, have a look with a torch and see how you go.

Regards, Andrew.

Brother printed paper issue

The ADF feed-in rollers need to be cleaned or replaced. Try raising the ADF lid and clean all the feed rollers with a soapy solution and cloth. If the problem persists, the rollers and double-feed prevention pad should be replaced.

My Brother 8860 DN does not copies, yet it can print . The menu screen only allows fax, not scan or copy.

This is commonly an issue with the Keypad PCB. We can get you pricing on parts if you want to try this as a repair. Does the machine beep 3 times when you hit the copy or scan keys?

MFC 440CN fax machine

Is this through the ADF (top feeder) or from the paper tray? Either one can have some build-up on the paper feed rollers and would have to be cleaned.
