Question about Samsung HCL4715W 47" Rear Projection Television

5 Answers

Blue convergence I suspected the conv module and replaced it with the latest "direct replacement" module which caused problems such as overheating when in any video mode except 1080i , the perfect focus no longer worked, When attempting to use perfect focus I get a message that says "NO Sensor Data" and finally the screen was not even from middle to top or bottom. The color lines in manual convergence were somewhat diagonal instead of vertical and horizontal.

replacing the new module with the old module cured the overheating problem and the "perfect focus" problem and the skewered picture problem but of course the blue convergence problem is still there. My thought is a bad new module or there may be different model #s for different series of TV serial #s

  • garlicjim Oct 17, 2008

The original part # appears to have been superseded at least 5 times. Assuming that the newest module is compatable with this tv then the new module is defective although I suspect that this isn't the problem. Samsung is absolutely no help. "Take it to a Service center" which I really don't wish to do based on its age.7+ years

  • garlicjim Oct 17, 2008

Twice in the past month the problem fixed itself but returned so I will do the probing and hard reset

  • garlicjim Oct 18, 2008

040 ics and pico fuse? are these detailed on the boards so I can find them?

  • garlicjim Oct 18, 2008

Willtab lead me through the procedure for factory convergence ect

This Problem seems like new module is faulty or not exact corresponding to your model. Make sure it's part number is recommended by manufacturer.

When you replace a convegence module you have to enter service mode and do a factory convergence. mute 183 will got yu there. then you have to save by hitting the add erasse button on remoter then do a perfect focus in service mode. this saves settings. if just the blue is out then it will possible be a resisotor or two on convergence module.. we use to work on alot ot these at the shop dont see too many i work on one last week. i replaced module and did factory service convergence. ones setting are save the set will have factory data. let me know if i can talk you through this... factory service can get tricky

Don't bring a tech in yet. It sounds like an errant internal connection to me. Likely a cold solder joint or something like that; even a tech has a hard time finding them.

Here is my recommendation - since you seem like the handy type. This will determine for sure if it is an errant connection or something more sinister.

ONE: Unplug the line cord for 4 hours as a hard reset; power up and try again to see if that has cured anything.

TWO: If not, power down, unplug, remove back come so you can get inside.

THREE: Put a mirror out front where you can see the picture when you are in the back probing around.

FOUR: With a long wooden stick or dowell from the hardware store (it must be non conductive) probe gently around in search of a pressure point that restores the picture - or makes it worse. With some probing around you may be able to either find the culprit or find a pressure point that cures the problem.....

Then let me know more...

makenamicro, there is still a convergence yoke the green crt which means there is still a drive control circuit that controls your dynamic and static convergence. If you are working with out a service manual it is still possible that one of the convergence power amps is out, since you mentioned that you can adjust the red and blue to conform to the green pattern then try to adjust the green with out the R/B present if you ca not still adjust you green pincushion problem then suspect one of the power conv amps or a defective green conv yoke.(don't forget to check the small value resistors usually around 2 ohm and the pico fuses if the tv uses them. good luck and i hope i answered your questions, please let this web site know if yes by leaving some pos feedback. thanks!

Picture on tv has blue and red going through the top and can people look like they had 2 heads on tv toshiba 42pw23p

try to align it by going into the convergence setting in your on screen menu, some proj tv have a multipoint conv alignment, this might do it for you, if it doe not then therre might be a problem with the red and blue convergence amps and on this model the digital conv module(dcm) can also be at fault.

Your TV most likely has one or more possible problems.

Problem #1: Convergence Chip Failure ( common problem )

Here are some of the most common symptoms and example photos of a convergence problem
  • Screen looks 3D
  • Colors don't line up
  • One or more colors can't be adjusted when using the convergence menu.
  • Screen is bowed or warped.

Here is a quick test....

Using your original remote go-to the tv settings then goto the convergence section.

Try to adjust the red and then the blue convergence.

You should be able to move them up, down, left, and right.

If you can't move them in all directions your convergence chips are bad and should be replaced. This is a common problem.

2c07611.pngSolution #1

You need to replace the convergence chips and convergence resistors. Check the site www.TvRepairKits.com. They have put together a kits for most models. If you don't see a kit for your set send them a quick note and they will put one together for you. Their kits include a photo instruction guide, original OEM Sanyo STK chips, convergence resistors, pico fuses, etc.

Problem #2 CRT Fluid is Cloudy

Projection TV tubes have a liquid coolant that is used to keep them from overheating. After many years the coolant in the blue and green tubes will become cloudy and cause the screen to look dull, red/orange, etc. You may even see halos around images.

Picture of a set that needs the fluid changed.

What you will need to do is replace the coolant and clean the crt. You can get a repair kit from www.TvRepairKits.com that includes replacement coolant, photos. instructions, etc.

Conv problems with no pic has sound

Projection TV sets need to have all three colors - RED - BLUE - GREEN - lined up correctly on the screen in order for the video to look normal. When its out of alignment the video will look 3D, wavy, distorted, etc. Most of the time you just need to adjust your convergence in the TV menu. If you cannot adjust it in the menu - then your convergence is broken and needs to be repaired.

This is a very common failure on these projection sets and a fairly simple DIY fix. All projeciton sets including Samsung, RCA, Sony, Philip Magnavox, Panasonic, Pioneer, Akai, GE, JVC, Toshiba, and others at some point will have the same problem.

Common Symptoms include....
  • Screen looks 3D
  • Colors don't line up
  • One or more colors can't be adjusted when using the convergence menu.
  • Screen is bowed or warped.
  • TV shuts off after powering on. Power light will blink. TV may also make a chirping noise.
Here are some photos of convergence problems.

You should be able to move RED and BLUE in all directions - up, down, left, and right. And you should be able to get the grid straight.

If you can't move them in all directions or cant move them far enough your convergence chips are bad and should be replaced. This is a common problem.

Note: If you TV has as flash focus or magic focus button only try pressing the button. If it fails to fix the convergence your need to fix it. See below for a fix

69189a5.pngCONVERGENCE SOLUTION

You will need to replace the convergence chips and possibly some convergence resistors and pico fuses.
This is a a fairly easy DIY job if you are handy and can follow directions. You can get complete repair kits from TvRepairKits.com or click here. They have put together DIY repair kits that include the OEM parts and step by step photo instructions for each repair. If you are not handy or can't follow directions we would suggest calling a shop.

Go in and find the conv ICs, they will be mounted on a big heatsink1.gif and the wires going to the conv yokes will most likely plug in somewhere closeby.

Conv ICs are the workhorse of the CRT RPTV, and it is not unusual at all for them to need to be changed out at some time in the life of a CRT RPTV.

Mr Bob

Comment by MrBob84, posted on Feb 04, 2008 PS -
The wires for the conv yokes at the CRT necks are the thin ones. The thicker ones are for the hor and vert sweeps, which must never be disconnected from their circuitry during
CRT operation.

If your beam loses sweep on any of the CRTs, it will instantly score/gouge your phosphors on your CRT faces, vaporizing the phosphors there and ruining the CRTs. The beam is very powerful, but in normal operation moves incredibly fast, not damaging anything. Any slowdown of the movement of the very powerful beam that draws the picture, acts like the searing vaporizing beam in Tom Cruise's War of the Worlds.
