Opening a Sta-rite system 2 filter

I need to clean the cartridge of a sta-rite system 2 filtration system-plm300. So here was my problem....

I shut off the equipment. Released the pressure valve. Unscrewed the lock ring around the outer middle of the filter and lifted it off. Then I grabbed the top handles and tried to lift the lid of the filter off. It would not come off. My question is how do I get it off? Do I have to twist it a certain way? Is there some type of suction keeping it on? I was torquing on it pretty good to the point where I was afraid I was gonna break something. Can someone basically tell me how to get the filter open so I can clean the cartridge and if there are any important things to know about opening...closing and washing it.

I will be working on this alone. Not sounding like the best solution. What is the problem? Is there some type of vacuum or suction that is keeping it on? Any other options?

The ring that holds the two havles together has litttle tabs on it . insert one of those tabs into one of the notches between the two havles of the filter and rock it back and forth. just make sure to crack open the air bleed valvle after you shut of the pump.

I was in the pool business for 20 years and the way we open them, may scare you a little. We do just what you have done, then have someone hold down on the top so it will not blow too far off, then stand to the side and turn the pump back on for a few seconds(STAYING READY TO TURN IT BACK OFF) when it blows off! Put a clear lubricant on the gasket to reassemble! BE CAREFULL!

This is the best way but you can try a piece of flat metal ie: pry bar and leave the drain valve open! Be careful not to marr the seperation joint! If I were working alone, I would turn the pump on and off till you see it begin to rise, then quickly put the pry bar between the two pieces before the top goes down!

Sorry I can't help but this is the way we did it even when alone!

shut off pump breaker at the lowest faucet drain completely. Turn it back on. If this doesn't work, you have to change out the pressure valve on the side of the tank. it's not hard.

I changed my cartridges and now the filter will not fill to the top? I have NO pressure on the gauge and no pressure on the relief valve?

It sounds like the seal didn't seat properly. Try re-seating the seal by opening the unit as you did to change the cartridges and checking the main seal (noted as part number 23 on the diagram) The seal should feel smooth and flexible not cracked or stiff. Re-seat as necessary and carefully close the unit. If you are still not getting any pressure try priming the unit as much as possible before starting.

I replaced the sand in the filter and had the gasket replaced. When I turn the pump on no matter what the setting all of the water comes out the waste port on the pump. I am getting very little water out...

Check your skimmer and pump basket for an obstruction that might be causing your lack of water flow to and from the pool. There could also be a restriction in your intake/return lines. Also, check for air intake in the return line (cracks or breaks). Any one of these issues could be causing problems with these sand pool filters.

Have a Sta-Rite cartridge filter that is leaking from somewhere underneath. Is there a gasket, ring or something that needs replacing? Can I use a bead of silicon to seal it? It is only about 5 years...

It is probably your o-ring that needs to be replaced. These are very commonly worn in these types of pool filters. It should be part number PLM100 or PLM150 and should be fairly easy and inexpensive to find and replace.
