your response has been most helpful. thank you. in answer to your question "does the light go on", the light does not go on, the clock does not work, there is absolutely no power at all. it just went blank and died. hate to dispose of it if it is repairable at a reasonable cost since a comparable new one is aboit $580. would appreciate any further advice you can offer. thanks again.

Does the light come on when you open the door?

It may be a fuse or thermostat or thermal cutout. These are all quite affordable repairs for you or a friend to do.

If you or someone you know decide to look into it, we have critical safety information and disassembly information at our site, and our link is at our listing here on FixYa.

Also at our site, we now have a video available showing how to remove a typical over the range control panel assembly in under 5 minutes.

There should also be a "mini-manual" hidden inside the unit behind the control panel or hidden on the left side behind the grille, which is very helpful when troubleshooting & testing.

You can usually find helpful exploded view diagrams and order parts by entering your full model number here.

We're happy to help you with free advice and we'd appreciate your thoughtful rating of our answer.

I would refer you back to my solution and advise you or a friend to unplug it, remove the grille and control panel, and try to find the mini-manual. The video is helpful for this.

Also, the fuse may be immediately visible right away behind the grille or control panel.

Then refer to the mini-manual for checking the magnetron thermostat.

If the fuse and magnetron thermostat are okay, then you need to check the oven thermostat, which is located on top of the chassis.

You'll have to pull the oven from the wall to check that. I'd recommend you refer to the installation instructions. You can download GE owner's manuals and installation instructions here.

If and when you need to look up parts, enter your model number is this format: JVM1190AY02.

check the wall socket to make sure you have electricity to the plug. Secondly then check to see of the appliance "fuse" has blown, simple repair. If not, you have a costly serious issue.

I have a ge model JVM1850. It is 6yrs old. Today it suddenly did not heat a frozen small item thru. Does this sound repairable or do I need to consider replacement? It is above oven.

well!!!!!! its 6 years old,,,,my bet is the manatron has failed,,,and thats a pricy part to buy and have fitted,,,
you may find in the long run its cheeper to just buy a new microwave,,at least it would be a new one and not 6 years old! and not a patch up job

GE JVM1190WY 003 Microwave Convection sparks

The problem that you are having is that the magnetron inside the microwave is shorting out to ground and it will find the shortest path to reach whatever has metal in it. Replacing the magnetron will solve your problem altogether and you need not do anything else different and continue using your metal racks.
