1 LONG BEEP 2 SHORT BEEPS

Does anything ever post to the screen when you press the power button? if not, it's your video card. The links below are for 1 long and 2 short and they say it's the video card. I've heard that Sony extended the warranty on some models so you might want to go to their website and check yours or in a google search type: Sony GPU Extended Warranty. I did and I see they extended it from one to three years. They have the faulty Nvidia Graphics Card which was a major problem for many manufacturers.

I have a sony vaio VGC desk top - it is probably 6 years old or so. I went to start it th other day and it sounds like its firing up and you can hear the fan working - then a constant beep noise starts...

The constant beep signifies that one or more RAM has(ve) been dislocated from the RAM socket(s). Try to re-assemble the RAM(s) into the proper position(s) and re-start your computer. I hope this will work the best for you.

My pcv-w20 has been sitting over a year, the lcd monitor show's the desktop and operates normal except that theres no light to the screen (had to use a flashlight to see it) just went dark one day! ...

There is a $20 part called the "inverter" that has failed.
Add $50 to $75 for a qualified video/TV technician to disassemble the LCD, replace the part, reassemble, and test it.

I don't know if this is the solution you're looking for but if it's less than a year old I would say call sony and get a replacement drive. They may even be required to have a year hardware warranty (but don't quote me on that). That would actually be much faster/easier than searching the internet for a firmware fix that may or may not exist or help at all.

My sony vaio makes a beeping sound one long and to short beeps and it wont turn on

One long beep and two short beeps usually means a video problem. If you have an add-on video card, try replacing it with a new one. If you are using an on-board video, go into the bios and turn it off. then shut down & install an add-on card.

An infection could cause the issues your having. I recommend letting a professional help you clean your system. Removing infections is very dangerous and risky. They can cause data loss and you risk making the system worse. I recommend NickLockard.com
