Question about Digital Cameras
I had a similar problem with my Sharp camorder.
The preview window on XP simply displays corrupted images.
At the end, I bought a different firewire card and it worked for me.

It's a Digital Hi8. Your tapes are Analog.
But it should play Analog also.
In the menu play with "PB Mode" settings.

SOURCE: I have a Sony DCR-TRV
means its a stuck tape tray or stuck open. But it actually can be one of a few parts on the tape tray. Sony actually wont give out information on this error cause there are so many failures. There are many people however that figured out how to fix this. Its actually a very big problem with sonys and ranges in 300-500$usd to get fixed by sony unless under warranty.
i believe these are the parts that you would need
Here's the part #39;s for mode gear & whole chassis,
Mode gear : X20244611
Whole Chassis excluding Drum : A1437006A
Sony Parts: 800-488-7669
and here is a video on someone repairing there sony camera with the same problem.
if you need further assistance i will be here to help you, thank you and good luck.

SOURCE: Hello, I connected my DCR-HC54
This type of camera usually downloads better with a Firewire (DV) connection. Sony call this "i.Link". Some mini-DV cameras only use the USB connection (if they have one) for stills and can only download video by Firewire. This is because you have to play the tape into the computer, not just copy a file. According to a list on the Sony site, your particular model is not one that can use USB for video transfers to computer.
Most PCs have a USB port, but no Firewire port. Macs often have a Firewire port but may not have USB. As most Windows PCs do not come with this interface, you might need to fit an add-on Firewire interface card. This will come with a driver for the card.
Suitable Firewire (DV) cables can easily be found on Amazon or eBay. You will need the kind with a small (four pin) connector at one end and a larger (six pin) connector at the other.
Sony have a help page for your camera, with tutorials and downloads, at THIS LINK

I'm sorry that the Camcorder is not ejecting tape. Please follow the troubleshooting steps provided below and check the operation:
1. Please make sure that the battery is fully charged. 2. Perform Reset by following steps:
1. Locate the RESET button behind the LCD panel of the camcorder. 2. Use a pointed object (like a ballpoint pen) to press and hold the RESET button for 2-3 seconds. 3. After 2-3 seconds has elapsed, release the RESET button.
3. Perform a manual power reset by following the steps:
1. Turn off the camcorder. 2. Disconnect AC power adapter. 3. Remove the battery pack. 4. Move the POWER switch to the CAMERA position for 15 seconds. 5. Move the POWER switch to the OFF position. 6. Reconnect the AC power adapter or reinsert the battery pack. 7. Turn on the camcorder.
If the issue persists after following all the steps service will be required. You can find repair information and initiate service at:
